On the auspicious event of HANDLOOM WEEK, we would like to bring to your attention, a rather unfortunate circumstance that needs to be addressed. Our district of Nadia, with its abundance of natural beauty and ancient culture, also is a home to handloom and artisanal weavers. With the subsequent result of Covid Lockdowns and diminishing economy, and the already existing perils of exploitative market forces, our weavers have been forced to look for menial jobs to make ends meet. You may have purchased a handloom product at a fairly higher price from the market in the past, but sadly, the makers of those products do not get paid appropriately. It is estimated that a weaver gets paid with roughly 70-75 Rupees per saree weaved. So, to meet his demand of basic necessities, he needs to weave three sarees at the least per day (which in my opinion is fairly impossible and a rather draining task).
So, we at , have taken the initiative to revive the dying art of weavers in our locality. This had been in our priority list for a long time. Now, with your support, we are partnering up with our local weavers who had been on the verge of leaving their craft, and pledging on providing them with their deserved share, eliminating the middlemen in the process. Let us come together, and join hands to make the lives of the craftsmen better and let sustainable craft live.
