A Glimpse into the Making of Kanchipuram Silk Sarees 🧵✨ | Industrial Visit
Our industrial visit to Kanchipuram gave our students an incredible opportunity to step beyond the classroom and experience the traditional handloom industry up close.
During the visit, our students explored how the iconic Kanchipuram silk sarees are made—from the very beginning of the process to the final woven saree.
They learned about the silk yarn, how it is prepared and processed, and how the yarn undergoes dyeing to achieve the rich and vibrant colours seen in Kanchipuram silk. They also got to understand how the dyed threads are carefully prepared and arranged before they are taken to the handloom.
One of the most fascinating parts was witnessing how skilled weavers transform individual threads into a beautiful saree using the traditional handloom weaving process. Our students could observe how the warp and weft threads are interlaced, how intricate motifs and traditional designs are created, and how the characteristic Kanchipuram borders and pallu come together during weaving.
They also gained a better understanding of why Kanchipuram silk sarees have different price ranges by observing the amount of craftsmanship, quality of silk, intricate designs, weaving techniques and time involved in producing each saree.
For a fashion designing student, understanding the journey of a fabric is just as important as learning garment construction. Seeing the process in real life helps students connect their theoretical knowledge with the actual textile industry.
