Of course you know how to wash your hair (or so you think). You've been doing it for years, so we can't blame you for thinking you know it all. But truth be told, most girls don't know the basic rules for a proper hair wash. As a result, they land up with hair problems like dandruff, hair fall, dry scalp et al. From the roots to the tips, washing your hair requires some expertise. So take a look at these 12 basic rules for washing your hair and maintaining a healthy mane, and make sure you're doing it right.

1. Rinse your hair thoroughly: The first important step for a good hair wash is rinsing your hair thoroughly. This helps you create more lather with less shampoo. Use warm water (not hot) to wet your hair and open the scalp pores.

2. Use the correct shampoo: Choose a shampoo that suits your scalp and hair type. There are special shampoos for dry scalp, oily scalp, dandruff and other hair problems. Similarly, there are shampoos for coloured hair, frizzy hair and normal hair too.

3. Dilute your shampoo: Before you apply shampoo to your hair and scalp, dilute it in a little water. This will reduce the high concentration of chemicals in the shampoo.

4. Massage your scalp: While you shampoo your hair, use your finger tips to massage your scalp in circular motion.Do not scrub; just simply rub your finger pads on the scalp. It will clean the dirt and remove dead cells from your scalp.

5. Conditioner is not for the scalp: Conditioner is very important but it was never made for the scalp! Apply conditioner from the mid length of your hair to the tips. Let it remain for a couple of minutes to moisturise your strands before washing it off.

6. De-tangle your hair: While you condition your hair, de-tangle it. It will be easy for you to open hair knots while the conditioner is on.

7. Avoid hot water on your hair: Never use hot water for a hair wash. It will damage your scalp, roots and hair. Use warm water while rinsing your hair before you shampoo, and cold water to rinse off the conditioner. Cold water will close the open pores and seal the hair strands tight.

8. Less is more: Follow the 'less is more' rule when using shampoo and conditioner during your hair wash. Do not apply too much of shampoo or conditioner to your hair.

9. Check your scalp: It is important that your scalp is shampoo-free before you step out of the shower. Touch your scalp and see if you feel any soapiness. If yes, clean your scalp thoroughly with cold water. Shampoo or conditioner residue can damage the scalp and cause dandruff too.

10. Do not brush wet hair: Hair is very fragile and weak when it is wet. Do not brush your hair directly after shower. Let it dry before you run a comb or brush through your locks.

11. Gently towel dry: Do not rub wet hair with a towel. Just gently squeeze hair in between the towel and let it dry on its own.

12. Never sleep with wet hair: Avoid sleeping with wet hair. If you wash your hair late in the night, make sure to dry it before you hit the bed. Hair is fragile when wet and will tend to break as you toss and turn in your sleep.
