Erdenzuu Monastery, the oldest Buddhist temple in Mongolia at the heart of the Origin Valley. Nearby was the city of Kharkhorin which was the center of the Mongolian Empire under Ogedin, a son of Chingiss Khan. This entire area is a UNESCO World Heritage site to mark the Cultural Heritage Landscape of Mongolia.

It was exhilarating to meet a National champion, 8th generation Kazakh eagle hunter in the Chigertei National Park. The eagle he is holding is the 6th that he has trained. Typically it takes 3 years to train an eagle. They keep the eagle for 6 years in total and then it is released into the wild. We had a delicious high tea with the Kazakh family.

Recently I spent a week on a memorable road trip : Delhi, Ranthambhore, Gwalior, Panna, Delhi. This will definitely be on a Gadabout next year. The jungles of Ranthambhore and Panna National Parks in March have a gaunt beauty all their own! Staying at and was a homecoming. We foraged for seeds in the jungles to try and grow them back on our farm. Most pics here are Ranthambhore and Gwalior. Next post will have Panna.

11th century Buddhist monasteries of Ratnagiri, Lalitgiri and Udaigiri were discovered as recently as the 1950s when excavation work was started by the ASI. The work continues till date while the process off moving villages in the area continues. We rounded off the Buddhist circuit by visiting Dhauli where Emperor Ashoka renounced warfare and adopted Buddhism. The first edict engraved in stone was fascinating to see. The elephant carving is more than 2000 yrs old……how exciting is that!

A crafts village that continues its tradition of Gotipua folk dance form which lead to the classic dance form, Odisi and performed by young boys and men. Pattachitra, palm leaf engraving and stone carving. Traditionally all of these arts and crafts were linked only to the Jagannatha Temple at Puri.
