And...the RESULT is out !!

A total of 15 women were part of this assessment process. After evaluating their work on the set parameters we have chosen 7 out of 15 to be a part of Katran Kalaa Team.

All of them will go through a training for a week in which they will learn to handle the materials, use the right tools and few surface development techniques.
Keep an eye out on this space, if you are interested to know more about our new team members.

3/3

Now we had both the problems carved out for us - first - the livelihoods issue of the villages and second - the scraps from the leather and the textile industries around us.

In the meantime, as we were spending more time in the villages, we were introduced to the untapped artisanal potential in every household especially the women of the household. Traditionally these women participated in different hand crafts such as basket weaving, cot weaving but never thought of it as a vocation to earn.

This is where we come to the picture. Slowly and persistently we showed the upside of these art forms and their earning potential. We identified a few curious but skeptical women. We spoke to their families and their husbands. But that's a story for another day.

After understanding the socio-economic conditions of the community members, we then tried to understand our primary problem i.e. waste - from leather and textile industry. We interacted with a lot of industry owners in and around the region and tried to arrive at a rough estimate of the scraps generated from their respective industries.

More than 2,556 tonnes of leather and textile scraps directly end up in the landfills on an annual basis from just these 3 factories we surveyed in Kanpur alone. Just imagine the amount from such 15500 industrial units running in the city.(data from MSME report on Kanpur Industrial Area, Report 2018)

Today we will share a little more about the process we followed to design our intervention.

1/3

We did a deep dive into mapping the problems in the region we decided to work in. We interacted extensively with the community members of the villages, doing some old-fashioned face to face survey. We not only gathered demographic data but also felt the pulse. (Pulse as in the general mood, feelings - the intangibles, the qualitatives (if you are too obsessed with the terminology:P) )

More than 80% of the households in the villages surveyed belong to marginalised communities and have an annual income of less than ₹75,000/-.

The cumulative experience of our founding team of working in the villages of India is more than nine years. But the learnings garnered in these years are of a lifetime as every day broke the shackles of myth and engaged various faculties of mind such as intellect, will and senses.

Empiricism, the idea that all knowledge comes from experience, is an unknown practice that rural community members from Gujarat to Assam, from Kashmir to Tamil Nadu engage in. During a lot of our interactions with communities across the country, we experienced a sense of depth, profoundness and reassurance in them. They have learnt from the best teacher - Life and probably the best methodology - Observation. And therefore, their learnings are unbiased and their solutions seem commonsensical.

Why do we start caring about climate change only when a teenager from a developed nation alarms the entire world about it?
Why do we almost never talk about the ingenious practices of our grandmothers disposing and managing waste in the villages of our country?
Why is pessimism more seductive than optimism?

Hey there, how are you doing today?
Did you guys know that gratitude helps us immensely with the
marathon called ‘Life’?

Research says that there is a strong correlation if not causation between gratitude and
happiness. Gratitude can improve relationships. For instance, one of the research conducted on
couples found that people who took time and effort to express their gratitude to their partners
not only felt more positive about their partners but also felt easier to express concerns regarding
their relationships, addressing issues at a nascent stage.

Do you express gratitude? If yes, please let us know in the comments, how?

This journey started with our founder desperately feeling the need to do something for the women in her village, especially the ones who deeply shaped her as the person she is today. Even as a child her deep vivid imaginations painted a world with more empowered women. As a design student at one of the premier fashion institutes of the country, she was again troubled by something that was insignificant to most of her peers - Waste scraps of fabric. She did her bit in her college, but pledged herself to do more.
