Every weave has its own story, and sometimes the fabrics we least expect become the most loved. Interesting how textiles surprise us.
Many times, I order a fabric very hesitantly, wondering if anyone will appreciate it. More often than not, those are the very fabrics everyone wants! And then there are the ones that Mr. Basak confidently says, “This is beautiful, you must buy it,” which somehow end up waiting the longest for a buyer.
These Bengal cottons come from the weaving clusters of Bardhaman and Murshidabad. The collection is beige checks and delicate zari stripes, woven in a high yarn count that gives the fabric a beautiful drape and soft feel. Price 550 per metre.

The bandhej 3 meter kurta is 2750 and striped Kala cotton is 700 a meter. Shibori kurta’s are 2500 & 2850 dyed with organic indigo.

Muslin and Kala Cotton refer to two completely different aspects of textiles. Muslin refers to the weave a light, airy, plain weave , while Kala Cotton refers to the specific plant grown without pesticides because of the weather and soil and its from Kutch.
Muslin is how it is woven , a plain weave. While Kala cotton is the quality of organic raw fibre.
Price 450 pm for Handspun handwoven muslin & 400 pm for Kala cotton.

Weaving is an art for some & vocation for 1000’s of people spread around. In woven fabric, "reed" and "pick" refer to the two main elements in weaving. The warp (threads running vertically) and the weft (threads running horizontally).
Reed: The number of warp ends per inch which is to do with the fabric's width and lengthwise thread density.
Pick: The number of weft yarns per inch which shows how tightly packed the crosswise threads are.
Price 550 a meter , sage green & grey & mauve with white.

Today’s post is about all those queries that I get about using this fabric for sarees. In fact the other day I saw a post where a lady had taken plain white mul & put a red check all around as facing with a peplum check blouse. It looked stunning.
Price 850 for natural indigo Jaamdani & 500 for multi colour horizontal stripes. Beige check is 350 a meter & brown is 2/1 natural 500 a meter.

MENGIKAT….. The word "ikat" comes from the Malay-Indonesian word mengikat, which means "to tie" or "to bind". This is one crafts which is popular & woven in lot of central Asian countries. It involves resist-dyeing and then weaving where the yarns are meticulously tied, dyed, and patterned before they are woven into fabric. Tough job.
The price always has to do with the count and Rid & p*k of the yarn. They are two very fundamental important factors of handloom. Price is 1050 a meter , you can pay the weaver directly and it will be sent to you. I only have 2.5 meters as I had got for someone. The tulip design I have 5 meters.

Is this heat going to roast us one day. The weather is so sad that you don’t want to see any dark colour yet I know lot of us who want to wear bright colours in these hot depressing days. I am one of them.
So sharing the white Jaamdani with a small bindi red Mina , for a cool calm outing. Though white reminds me of Meena Kumari our actress.
Price 675 a meter.
