Ever heard about a fabric which is made in a peaceful manner? No? Well, Eri silk is the answer. Shawls made of Eri silk are adored by the people of the northeast region especially, Assam. You will be amazed to know that no silkworm is killed during the processing of the Eri silk. To gain it, the eri silkworm spins short segments of a filament and creates a cocoon that is open at one end – enabling the moth to emerge. This peace silk is, therefore, a very popular among vegans and Buddhists. The processing, weaving and spinning majorly involve the womenfolk from rural as well as tribal areas. It is carried out by them on a regular basis. It is also known as the silk of the poor. Eri silk has astonishing attributes; it is strong, provides cotton-like comfort to the wearer, and keeps you warm too. It is said, that the more it is worn, the more it becomes softer. So, make sure you give a try to this intriguing textile. Your small gesture will encourage the weavers of our nation and will keep them motivated.
