Fashion 👗👕 is one of the world’s most polluting industries 💨 and is projected to use 25% of the world’s carbon budget by 2050. With 2 billion more people set to join the global middle class by 2032, the impact of the industry will continue to accelerate 🌪 unless we fundamentally change how fashion operates. The solution is becoming increasingly clear – we need a circular economy 💡
But, Wait! What is a circular and linear economy even? 🤷🏻♀️
A linear economy 〰️ is made of markets where the raw materials are processed into products that are thrown away after use.
🔺For example : Cotton is harvested and spun into fabrics that are made into beautiful outfits sold in the market. These garments are bought, used and discarded after use by its consumer.
A linear economy traditionally follows the “take-make-dispose” step-by-step plan. Value is created in this economic system by producing and selling as many products as possible.
-------------------------------
A circular economy 🌀 is made of markets where the raw materials or the products made from the raw materials used are either reduced, reused or recycled. It can be defined as “the decoupling of growth from the use of finite resources by eliminating waste at every stage of the value chain.”
🔺For example : High-quality/biodegradable fabrics that are tailored into gorgeous ensembles that can be passed on, donated or recycled by its consumer after use.
A circular economy follows the 3R approach:
> Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Resource use is minimized (reduced).
Reuse of products and parts is maximized (reuse)
Raw materials are reused (recycled)
📣 The good news? 📣
The shift to this circular fashion system has already begun – 12.5% of the fashion industry has committed to circularity, while many leading retailers have set bold ambitions towards a sustainable future. 💜
Consumer awareness of the environmental impacts of fashion is accelerating the pace, and urgency of this transformation!
