Ikat weaving has been Prabhakar’s family tradition and also mode of income since generations. He joined this art of weaving at the age of 12. His parents and siblings, the entire family worked hard to weave Ikat fabric in an attempt to earn a decent living for themselves. As years passed by, Prabhakar perfected this art, but his earnings dwindled. Finally, the family quit weaving and looked for alternate ways of earning.

Prabhakar started stitching uniforms for schools at Rs 80 per uniform. His wife also joined him in stitching. His children went to a small government school in Koyalagudem village.

When we met him, we realized that he could weave double Ikat complex designs with ease. But he was unwilling to start weaving again. After lot of persuasion, he agreed to weave a few double Ikat dupattas for us. He was happy with the payments from Heritage Weaves. He got interested and started weaving more for us.

It has been two years; he is weaving for us. His wife joined him back in weaving. His children are now able to get better education.
When asked if he will train his children in weaving, he just threw a light smile and said he isn’t so sure about that. When I told him that some of the designers sell these double Ikat sarees at prices ranging from 1 lakh to 3 lakhs, he was astonished and speechless.

Heritage Weaves shares its profits with the weavers to instill the much needed confidence in them that weaving is not a dying art but a viable livelihood option.
