It’s fun to make something you can finish in a weekend! I liked the red and yellow colour threads in this warm woollen blend from The Sewing Lair. I made red piping using bias and string and now have a winter work skirt. This will be the only time I’ll ever wear it with heals though!

How did we end up here?

Australians are now among the largest consumers of fast fashion in the world — even surpassing the United States.

Every year, around 200,000 tonnes of textiles go to landfill in Australia, much of it clothing that is still perfectly usable.

When clothes are treated as disposable, they quickly become waste.

At The Nest, we believe the solution starts earlier — by learning how to repair, reuse, and rethink the way we consume clothing.

Because reducing textile waste doesn’t begin in landfill.

It begins with keeping clothing in use for longer.

This traditional technique is time consuming but completely beautiful, using natural dyes from onion, turmeric and mango leaves with the sun setting the dye.

So if you can get an injury while doing it, perhaps sewing is a sport!
