Bagru handblock printing is a traditional textile art from Bagru, a village in Rajasthan, India, practiced for over 300 years by the Chhipa community. It involves hand-carving intricate designs into wooden blocks, which are then dipped in natural dyes and stamped onto fabrics like cotton, silk, or linen to create vibrant, eco-friendly patterns. Key features include:

Natural Dyes: Derived from plants, minerals, and other natural sources, such as:Indigo (blue) from Indigofera tinctoria.Madder, pomegranate rind, or turmeric (reds and yellows).Harda (myrobalan fruit) for a yellowish base or as a mordant.Iron solutions (from fermented horseshoes and jaggery) for black.
Techniques:Direct Dye Printing: Dyes are applied directly via blocks for bold geometric or floral motifs.

Dabu Printing: A mud-resist technique using a paste of clay, gum, and lime to block dye pe*******on, creating unique, often cracked patterns after washing.Characteristics: Known for cream or dyed bases (unlike Sanganer’s white base), bold colors (red, black, indigo), and motifs like waves, checks, trellises, or local flowers (e.g., sunflower, narcissus). Imperfections, like slight block misalignments or dye fading (especially indigo), add to its handmade charm.Process: Fabrics are pre-treated with harda or alum for dye absorption, printed on long tables, and sun-dried.
