The fashion industry is infamous for its impact on the environment and human health.We at ERIONWEAR realise this by identifying fashion with eco-friendly practices. Each of our garments are made entirely from eri silk processed manually, dyed naturally and woven in handlooms with the least possible environmental impact. We are presently a micro-enterprise based in the rural outskirts of Guwahati

in NE India. The goal is to impact livelihoods including rural weaving communities, enable eri plantations, & organic dyeing.

As the waters recede in this part of the state and the weather becomes a bit more stable, we have slowly resumed our work. An eri silk saree should feel like an eri silk saree and not just another handwoven piece.When you hold one you should get that feeling of holding a sturdy, a bit heavier than your usual closet ones, that feeling of being made by women for women, that feeling of protection from everything outside and confidence the moment you drape it, and that you should stand out in the crowd. We make our sarees in that way .. sturdy, rugged yet comfy and you feel connected to the piece every single day; you love it more than the previous day; you fear that you might lose it (it will outlive you anyway); and that it brings out the minimalism in you but yet too sophisticated for the normals to understand.

A madder-lac-brazilwood dyed eri silk saree with muga ghicha extra weft work. Elements comprise of the signature Assamese (gach গছ buta) tree motif.

Cloudy day !! Another out of the loom...bigger elements interspaced by miniatures. A closer look at the larger motifs shows visible linear elements branching out symmetrically from a mid rib - these representing bell metal earthen pot stands, an integral part of community prayer halls in Assam (Naam Ghars, নামঘৰ ); flames from the earthen pots (diyas,বন্তি, চাকি ) represented by the sharper pointed elements. Complete with muga ghicha extra weft work.The base is handspun eri silk
dyed with locally sourced lac to give an impression of sun set. Lac exhibits a range of shades, the optimal being a modest pink. Please refer to the first pic for the actual shade.

"Golden deer under the Cosmic blue" done with natural indigo dyed handspun eri yarn and extraweft work with muga ghicha and madder dyed eri yarn.

The indigo represents the infinite universe with its innumerous galaxies each defined by the intricate geometrical motifs, and beneath is the carefree love and connection of the mother deer with her offspring.. also a part of the Universe.

a handmade piece of muga-hanspun (also known as muga ghicha) with a muga (reeled) segment. Muga ghicha yarn being handspun in a drop spindle has a more irregular surface while reeling results in a more continous smooth surface area resulting in the distinctive golden shine and priced at the premium range. Reeling of muga is done by plying together the filaments from multiple cocoons to a single yarn.Only those cocoons which have not been pierced or cut or infected can be reeled, rest are spun by pulling the surface fibres.

last few weeks we have witnessed frequent thunderstorms which adversely impacted the muga production cycle. However managed to retrieve some healthy cocoons which will go on as seed cocoons for the upcoming Jethua (summer) crop. This will be the last crop in the plains after which we will shift again to Garo hills.
