Indonesian masks, or topeng, are deeply spiritual and cultural wooden artifacts, traditionally used in dance-drama, ceremonies, and rituals to represent gods, ancestors, or mythical creatures. Rooted in animistic beliefs, they serve as conduits for spirits, with skilled artisans carving them from light wood (like p**e) to be used in, for example, Balinese Hinduism to portray the struggle between good and evil

Babasaheb also had a keen sense of aesthetics and loved painting. This artistic aspect of his vibrant personality has not received much attention, and it’s what we want to shine light on, for Babsaheb’s birth anniversary.

A sign of sweets to come

As children, some of us have been told that spotting a chemboth or uppan, as the bird is called in different parts of Kerala, is a sign that we will get a sweet treat!
Come to think of it, the chemboth/ uppan (greater coucal) is a little scary with its red red eyes…we suppose its transformation into an omen of sweet treats must’ve brought relief and joy to many a child.

The achappam (rose cookie) is one of the many treats we looked forward to getting and its form simply lent itself to this totem.
