* - The Naturelle Fibre Company*, a * * * Model* based engagement started working with the impoverished handloom workers in Bengal in 2018. Still a long way to go with this work. The medium and large shops in urban cities have dedicated looms in village weaver clusters where the handloom weavers get paid per saree they make. The sarees can be Silk sarees like Jamdanis of Phulia, Balucharees of Bishnupur or Cotton sarees from Shantipur and Dhaniakhali. A saree takes 3 to 10 days to make based on the design. The payment is based on the price finally fixed for the Saree but at a very small fraction of it. In a way they still work almost like indentured labour. Some of them have moved onto getting their own looms and having their own small weaving units. TNFC's focus has been to handhold them.

Despite their skill and the elegance of their weaving, artisans commonly receive only a small fraction of the saree's final sale price which can be . However, with TNFC’s ongoing handholding, some weavers have managed to break away from this traditional exploitative system and establish their own small weaving units, gaining more control and dignity in their craft.

TNFC Pvt Ltd is registered in Kolkata, West Bengal, as an underprivileged community-owned sustainable apparel designing and garment manufacturing platform, striving to uplift and sustainably empower traditional spinning, handloom artisans and tailors by creating better pathways to market, supporting entrepreneurship, and advocating for fairer compensation and recognition of their craft.

Note:

The cost of Baluchari sarees from Bishnupur typically ranges from about ₹9,500 to ₹30,000 per saree, depending on the complexity of the designs, the weave, and the authenticity of the silk. The average price for a high-quality handwoven piece, especially in silk, is commonly between ₹10,000 and ₹16,000.

However, the wages paid to weavers are very low compared to the price fetched by these sarees in the market. According to recent reports:

For a Baluchari silk saree, an artisan earns as little as ₹300 after finishing one saree, despite a retail price of ₹5,000–₹30,000.

Typically, two artisans work together, spending about 3 days to finish a saree and each receives about ₹300 for their labor.

For threadwork (like preparing the fine silk threads), wages can be as low as ₹150 per day, with women and family members often involved in preparatory tasks for nominal compensation.

This huge disparity highlights the exploitation and financial distress faced by the traditional weaver community, despite the global renown and high market price of Baluchari sarees.
