Kotpad
The most distinct feature is the use of non-toxic natural dyes, primarily a deep reddish-brown or maroon hue derived from the roots of the indigenous "Aul" tree. Other colors like black and yellow from turmeric are also used.
Fabric: Woven by the Mirgan tribal community, the sarees are typically made from handspun cotton yarn, known for its soft, breathable texture, or sometimes tussar silk.
Design: Motifs are inspired by nature and tribal culture, such as fish, tortoises, crabs, axes, and conch shells, created using an intricate extra weft weaving technique.
GI Tag: The Kotpad handloom fabric was the first item from Odisha to receive a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2005, a mark of its authenticity and traditional origin.
Eco-Friendly: The entire production process is organic and labor-intensive, making the sarees environmentally friendly and safe for the skin.
