*How to Distinguish Authentic Handicrafts from Machine-Made Imitations*

*1. The Imperfection Test - The Soul of Handmade*
Authentic: Slight irregularities in weave, print, or shape. No two pieces are 100% identical.
Imitation: Perfectly uniform, symmetrical, flawless finish. Machine precision gives it away.

*2. The Backside Check*
Authentic: Back of handloom / hand embroidery / hand block print shows loose threads, uneven knots, or colour bleeding. The reverse tells the truth.

Imitation: Back is as clean and flat as the front, often with plastic backing or machine-stitched uniformity.

*3. Feel the Material, Not Just the Look*
Authentic: Handloom cotton is soft, breathes, has slubs and texture. Natural dyes have a muted, earthy tone.

Imitation: Synthetic feel, overly shiny, plastic smell. Chemical colours are unnaturally bright and flat.

*4. Price and Time Logic*
Authentic: If a Kantha or Baluchari saree that takes 15-20 days is priced at Rs. 800, it's not handmade.

Imitation: Mass-produced goods are cheap because time and skill are replaced by moulds.

*5. Know the Maker*
Authentic: Comes with a story - who made it, where, how long it took. Traceable to a cluster like Phulia, Bishnupur, Pingla.
Imitation: No origin, no artisan name. Label says "Handmade finish" or "Handloom-like".

*Quick tip for customers:*

> Ask 3 questions:

Who made it?
Where was it made?
How long did it take?

If the seller can't answer, it's likely not authentic.

Reference : A vibrant *Sujni / Appliqué tapestry* - made not from new fabric, but from rescued textile stories. Each leaf is hand-cut from leftover handloom, Ajrakh, Baluchari scraps and stitched together with running Kantha stitch.

Notice:
- No two leaves are same - shape, colour, texture all vary
- Raw edges, visible hand stitches, layered patchwork
- A perfect example of *Bengal's zero-waste wisdom*

This is not decor. It's sustainability, memory and craft stitched into one frame.

Owning and wearing a Lambani saree is a way to connect with this heritage and appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into making these beautiful pieces of art.

*PATTACHITRA AN ART BEYOND RELIGION*

Religious boundaries are incredibly porous for the Patuas (Pattachitra Painters). In the past, they would straddle both religions, living a dual life of sorts. Nonetheless, the community has for generations been plagued by the effluvium of religious discrimination.

The Hindus condemned them for embracing Islam, said Manu Chitrakar. Muslims, on the other hand, refused to accept us because we make idols, paint and sing about Hindu deities.

Many of them would have two names, a Hindu name and a Muslim name, so that both Hindu and Muslim households would let them perform for them, added Shambhu Chitrakar, who grew up on stories recounting his forefathers struggle for acceptance.

Ascribed to the caste of the Patua, who are hereditarily engaged in the illustration and performance of Patachitra, it is their association to this traditional occupation that characterizes their social identity.

The patua's predicament has evolved into a statement on communal harmony. On one hand they recite the namaaz and keep roza, on the other hand, they tell the tales of the gods and goddesses of the Hindus, derive strength from Mother Durga to complete their paintings which is a shining example of respectful co-existence between two religions, said Manu Chitrakar. The common title of *Chitrakar* helps Patuas reject a sociocultural identity based on religion.
