My mother was a woman of grace, creativity and humour.

She loved handlooms, and she loved embroidery with a burning passion. She introduced me to the love and beauty in handmade work. She insisted – Yeh hunar seekhna zaroori hai”. And so I learnt.

I would stitch clothes for my dolls under her guidance. When my children were born, she said, now you can stitch for your new dolls. I did, and those are now some of my fondest memories, dressing up my little ones in clothes I made.

I often think about how peacefully she would sit with a piece of fabric in her hands, stitching slowly with complete focus.
A great part of my love for Kantha, my respect for the artisans’ labour, and my emotional connection with hand embroidery was born from watching her hands create. Patiently and with love.

She is no longer with me, but every time I touch a handcrafted textile, visit an artisan village, or see a woman embroidering quietly, I feel her presence and miss her.

This Mother’s Day, I remember my mother, also the thousands of women whose hands keep traditions alive with love, patience and silent strength.

Miss you always, mummy.
Your love is stitched into every part of my journey.

Last week, I travelled deep into a village far beyond Shantiniketan…
A place where the roads disappear into broken paths, full of deep potholes… where every journey is slow, difficult, and tiring. It felt like stepping into a world untouched for decades.
Houses simple, lives even simpler.
I saw men walking gracefully with bundles of dried grass balanced on their heads… life here is not easy.
And yet… there was something rare.
Peace, Contentment.
A quiet kind of happiness we often forget in our fast lives. Many of these women have never even travelled by train. But their hands…

Eid, for me, has always been about togetherness.
The joy of being surrounded by family and friends… the excitement in the air as the day approached… the beautiful chaos of preparing for iftar… the warmth of everyone sitting together, waiting for the Maghrib azaan.
There was laughter, there were conversations, there was love in every corner.
New clothes, delicious food, मिठाइयाँ, and the simple happiness of being with your own people.
Eid was never just a celebration… it was a feeling. A feeling of belonging.
Today, life has changed. Everyone is busy, far away, caught up in their own worlds. And somewhere, in the quiet moments, I do feel the absence of those beautiful gatherings… of those familiar faces… of that togetherness which made Eid so special.
But even then, my heart is full of gratitude.
Grateful for the memories, for the love I have received, and for the safe and comfortable life I live today.

Some memories deserve a replay button! 😂

A few years ago, we celebrated Women’s Day at our Fort William store with our wonderful Army ladies, dear Kolkata friends, and the legendary as our Chief Guest. What followed was pure comedy gold — Usha ji decided to imitate me in her own dramatic style, and the entire store burst into laughter! I was laughing the loudest.

But in between the laughter came a moment I’ll always treasure. She said she loved the innocence and simplicity of Farah — words that stayed with me. Moments like these remind me how powerful women’s support and encouragement can be. When women lift each other up, celebrate each other, and share joy together, the world feels a little brighter.

And yes, she looked absolutely stunning in a saree from Kantha By Farah Khan while doing her hilarious act!
