Born from Britain's post-war race for a new generation of swept-wing jet fighters, the Hawker Hunter first flew in 1951 and evolved into one of the most recognizable combat aircraft of the early jet age. Its clean aerodynamic lines, Rolls-Royce Avon turbojet and exceptional handling produced a fighter that combined performance with a reputation pilots carried long after leaving its cockpit.

Armed in fighter variants with four 30 mm ADEN cannons, the Hunter was far more than an elegant airframe. It evolved through interceptor, fighter-ground attack, reconnaissance and training roles, serving with air forces across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

Its operational history stretched far beyond the RAF. Hunters flew in Indian service, including combat during the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pakistani wars, while other operators adapted the aircraft for their own tactical requirements. Singaporean Hunters even received Sidewinder capability, demonstrating how the basic design continued to evolve decades after its first flight.

Long before stealth became the dominant philosophy, the Tomcat was designed to detect, track, and destroy threats far beyond visual range. At the heart of that mission was the Hughes AN/AWG-9 radar, a system so powerful it could track 24 targets simultaneously and guide six AIM-54 Phoenix missiles at once. For decades, it remained the most capable long-range interceptor radar in U.S. naval aviation.

The Tomcat proved its value repeatedly in combat. During the 1981 Gulf of Sidra incident, two U.S. Navy F-14s shot down a pair of Libyan Su-22 Fitters after the Libyan aircraft launched missiles first. Eight years later, another pair of Tomcats destroyed two Libyan MiG-23 Floggers, reinforcing the aircraft's reputation as a formidable fleet defender.

But the F-14 was more than a fighter. Equipped with the Tactical Airborne Reconnaissance Pod System (TARPS), it became one of the U.S. Navy's most important reconnaissance platforms, collecting critical intelligence over hostile territory while retaining its full fighter capability.

From fleet air defense and reconnaissance missions to real-world air combat victories, the Tomcat evolved into one of the most versatile and respected naval aircraft ever built. Its retirement marked the end of an era few aircraft could match.

The F-86 Sabre was built to do something no Western fighter had done before—defeat the MiG-15 in its own sky.

When the Korean War erupted, the Soviet-designed MiG-15 shocked the world with its speed, climb rate, and heavy cannon armament. The answer arrived in the form of the swept-wing F-86 Sabre, a fighter that combined advanced aerodynamics with exceptional high-speed handling.

Over the skies of "MiG Alley," Sabre pilots fought some of the first large-scale jet-versus-jet battles in history. The aircraft earned its reputation through superior pilot visibility, precise gun sights, and the ability to remain controllable at the edge of the performance envelope where mistakes were often fatal.

Among the pilots who scored victories in the Sabre was 2nd Lt. Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin Jr., years before he became one of the first humans to walk on the Moon. Gun-camera footage from the conflict captured many of these engagements, preserving some of the most iconic moments of the jet age.

By the end of the war, the F-86 had become one of the defining fighters of the Cold War and a symbol of American air superiority. Few aircraft have left a larger mark on the history of air combat.

The B-2 Spirit was never built to be seen. It was designed to solve one of the most difficult challenges in modern warfare

When the Spirit entered service in 1997, it represented the culmination of decades of stealth research. Its flying-wing design eliminated many of the radar reflections produced by conventional aircraft, while its internal weapons bays allowed it to carry large payloads without compromising its low-observable profile.

Unlike tactical fighters, the B-2 was built for global reach. With aerial refueling, it can fly missions lasting more than 40 hours, launching from the United States, striking targets on another continent, and returning home without ever landing. Few combat aircraft in history have possessed that combination of range, payload, and survivability.

Despite its reputation, the Spirit's greatest strength is not invisibility. It is uncertainty. Adversaries must assume a B-2 could already be airborne, already approaching, and already inside their defensive network before detection becomes possible. That uncertainty remains one of the most powerful forms of deterrence in modern military aviation.

More than three decades after its first flight, the B-2 remains one of the most advanced combat aircraft ever built and a defining symbol of American strategic air power.

The F-117 was never supposed to win dogfights. It was built to solve a far more difficult problem—reaching the most heavily defended target on Earth without being stopped.

When the Nighthawk entered service, stealth wasn't a feature; it was the entire mission. Every angle, panel, and surface existed to scatter radar energy away from enemy receivers. The result was an aircraft that looked less like a fighter and more like a mathematical solution to a radar equation.

Its combat debut during Operation Just Cause and later performance in Desert Storm changed military aviation forever. F-117s struck command bunkers, air-defense nodes, and strategic targets deep inside defended airspace, proving that avoiding detection could be more valuable than speed, altitude, or maneuverability.

Yet the aircraft was never invincible. In 1999, an F-117 was shot down over Serbia after Serbian air-defense crews exploited predictable flight routes and brief moments when the bomb bay doors opened. The incident became a reminder that stealth reduces risk—it does not eliminate it.

Even decades after retirement, the Nighthawk remains one of the most influential aircraft ever built. Modern stealth fighters may look different, but they all trace part of their lineage back to the black, faceted jet that changed air warfare.

At the height of the Cold War, the Convair F-106 Delta Dart stood guard over North America as NORAD's premier all-weather interceptor. Its job wasn't dogfighting or ground attack. It existed for one purpose: detect and destroy Soviet bombers before they could reach the continent.

The aircraft combined a powerful Hughes fire-control system with data directly linked to the Semi-Automatic Ground Environment network. Ground controllers could guide a Delta Dart toward a target hundreds of miles away, calculate the intercept, and position the aircraft for a missile launch with minimal pilot input. In many ways, it was decades ahead of its time.

Its performance matched the mission. The F-106 could exceed Mach 2, climb rapidly to high altitude, and carry Falcon missiles alongside the AIR-2 Genie, an unguided nuclear rocket designed to destroy entire bomber formations with a single detonation. Few aircraft better embodied the logic of Cold War air defense.

Despite never firing a shot in combat, the Delta Dart became one of the most successful interceptors ever fielded, serving nearly three decades as the backbone of America's continental air-defense network.

Most fighters force pilots to manage radar screens, targeting pods, electronic warfare systems, and communications separately. The F-35 was designed differently. Its software fuses data from dozens of onboard and external sources into a single tactical picture, allowing the pilot to focus on decisions rather than interpreting raw information.

Stealth is only part of the equation. Internal weapons bays preserve its low-observable profile, while the AN/APG-81 AESA radar, Distributed Aperture System, and Electro-Optical Targeting System allow the aircraft to detect, track, and engage threats across air, land, and maritime domains. The result is a platform built around information dominance as much as combat performance.

What makes the aircraft unique is how it shares that information. An F-35 can detect a target, pass the data to another aircraft, ship, or air-defense battery, and contribute to an engagement without ever firing a weapon itself. In modern warfare, that level of battlefield awareness can be as valuable as speed or firepower.

Its design looked unnatural because every angle existed for one reason: scatter radar energy away from enemy receivers instead of back toward them.

During Operation Desert Storm, F-117s flew deep into heavily defended Iraqi airspace and struck command bunkers, radar sites, and strategic infrastructure with precision-guided weapons. Despite flying some of the war’s most dangerous missions, the aircraft maintained an operational record that changed how modern air campaigns were planned.

The jet carried all weapons internally to preserve its low observable profile, and even engine exhaust was carefully shielded to reduce infrared signature. It wasn’t built to dominate dogfights; it was built to appear over a target before the enemy realized an attack had even begun.
