Maheshwari Saree : A Royal Legacy of Craftsmanship

A “Garbh Reshami Maheshwari Saree” is a legendary royal textile from Maheshwar, Madhya Pradesh, originally conceived and designed by “Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar” in the 18th Century. According to legend, she invited skilled weavers from Surat & Mandu to settle in Maheshwar to create elegant garments for the royal family and dignitaries. The queen herself is said to have designed initial patterns. And Garbh Reshami is one of those weave.
Earlier the saree was woven in Pure Silk threads with rich golden Zari. Garb Reshami( meaning silk from the womb, referring to the finest quality silk- dense silk).
These days the sarees are made with a blend of pure silk & cotton threads(75% Mulberry Silk and 25% Mercerised Cotton). The designs woven in these sarees are directly inspired by local landscape and grand architecture of the Maheshwar Fort. Maheshwari sarees are lightweight, breathable, elegant showcasing luxury, comfort and heritage. A true authentic feature of Maheshwari Silk Saree is its reversible border called ‘Bugdi’ meaning both the side of the saree border is equally flawless.
Garbh Reshami saree mimics the design of chatai (traditional floor mats).

“Ajrakh” - A timeless nature inspired fabric printing art. Ajrakh is a unique combination of hand block printing & resist dyeing. The weaving process involves more than 14 steps, relies entirely on natural elements like water, sunlight and organic minerals, making it the most environment friendly textile tradition in India.
Around 400 years ago the king of Kutch invited master craftsmen of the Khatri community from Sindh to Kutch for their attractive fabric dyeing techniques. In olden times Ajrakh printing techniques were used only for men’s clothing like Lungi(lower wrap for men) Gamcha (shoulder cloth) & turbans. With modern times the Ajrakh printing techniques evolved with clothing for women.

Kala Cotton grown in Kutch, Gujarat is a direct descendant of these ancient old world cotton varieties, preserving rain-fed, low-input farming methods from the Harappan era.
Indus Valley Civilisation farmers cultivated tree cotton(Gossypium Arboreum/ Herbaceum) species which were short staples, sturdy fibres. Kala Cotton belongs to this same ancient lineage which is distinct from modern age cotton. This Cotton has not been hybridised or genetically modified.
Kala cotton is shorter staple and coarser, it can’t be spinned on high-speed machines hence it’s totally handcrafted. This cotton fabric is resilient than regular cotton. It’s highly breathable and good for hot climates.
