Vaishali S. Vaishali S Couture, an eponymous label, is born out of designer Vaishali Shadangule’s lifelong love for classic Indian weaves.

Milan studio- �Via Conservatorio 11, 20122 Milano, Italy Since its inception in 2001, the label has explored authentic hand-woven textiles from Chanderi silk to Khunn (a Karnataka-native weave that Vaishali helped revive), perennially telling culturally rich tales of the country’s heritage. The brand endeavours to take these diverse, intricate traditions to the global stage through her renditions

of classic weaves in unconventional
silhouettes — making each Vaishali S creation a masterwork of wearable art that flaunts a rich history. The label’s artistic vision is founded on rethinking age-old textile traditions in an evolving modern world. The brand also espouses the values of sustainability, zero-waste, and circularity as practiced in traditional Indian villages. Likewise, its operational processes are also with the weaver in mind — ensuring their economic stability along with taking their art to the world. The aim is to shift the “Made in India” tag from the margins into a tenet of mainstream design. Vaishali S has presented their collections in various high-profile fashion events in India and abroad, including the New York Fashion Week in 2015. The label’s inclination for a global style also prompted Alessandro Giuliani (Managing Director of SDA Bocconi Asia Center), who also shares the designer’s love for Indian weaves, to join hands with Vaishali S in 2018 — making it an Indo-Italian label. 2021 catapulted Vaishali S to the centre of the haute couture world when Vaishali became the first female designer from India to present at the Paris Haute Couture Week in July.

HANDLOOM IS NOT THE PAST. IT IS THE FUTURE OF LUXURY.

As we close the celebrations of National Handloom Day, I look back at this special presentation a precursor to National Handloom Day, created in collaboration with the Development Commissioner (Handlooms), Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.

This show is a statement about what Indian handloom can become when we stop looking at it only as heritage to be preserved and start seeing it as a living, evolving language of luxury.

India has something the rest of the world does not centuries of handwoven traditions, extraordinary techniques, regional identities and the hands of generations of master weavers behind every metre.

But heritage alone is not enough.

If we genuinely want to protect this tradition, we have to create a future for it.

Handloom should not exist only in museums, archives or ceremonial occasions. It should live on international runways, in luxury wardrobes, in contemporary homes and in the imagination of the next generation.

And this requires all of us designers, institutions, industry, media and consumers to come together with genuine intent, not simply use handloom as a marketing tool or a seasonal narrative.

Without changing its soul, we need to change the language.

We need to communicate its beauty, craftsmanship and value in a way the world understands today and make Indian handloom desirable, aspirational and globally relevant.

Because when we make handloom desirable,
We preserve livelihoods.
We preserve knowledge.
We preserve identity.
And we give the next generation of weavers a reason to continue.

This is the India I believe in.

An India where our oldest traditions become the foundation of our most contemporary luxury.

Handloom is not something we need to save from disappearing.
Handloom is something we need to take to the world.

This fashion show it is a celebration of India’s incredible handloom heritage and the extraordinary artisans whose hands bring these masterpieces to life.

Every silhouette, every texture, and every movement on this runway reflects the beauty, innovation, and timeless elegance of our handwoven textiles. It has always been my mission to take Indian handloom to the global stage and show the world that our weaves represent the finest luxury, craftsmanship, and sustainability.

I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to DC Handlooms DC Handloom Dr Beena and the Ministry of Textiles Ministry of Textiles for believing in this vision and supporting this journey. Together, we are creating opportunities, preserving traditions, and bringing global recognition to India’s weaving communities.
