Last month I told you what standard paint is doing to the air in your home.

Today , the follow-up I promised. What to put on your walls instead.

The short answer: lime wash.

Standard paint is a chemical formulation that off-gasses Volatile Organic Compounds , VOCs for months, sometimes years, after application. The smell of fresh paint is not just an aesthetic experience. It is your home releasing chemicals. And every repaint cycle restarts the process.

Lime wash is the opposite.

Made from slaked lime, water, and natural pigment, nothing else. Used on buildings across India for thousands of years. It is one of the most honest materials you can put on a wall.

What it does that standard paint does not:
→ Zero VOC. Completely non-toxic.
→ Naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. Mould cannot grow on lime.
→ Breathable. It regulates humidity rather than trapping moisture.
→ More beautiful with age. Every variation becomes character.
→ Durable. It hardens and bonds with the wall over time.

And then there is clay plaster : the earthiest, most tactile option. Warm. Breathable. Deeply connected to the land. In a farm stay or rural home, nothing is more honest or more right.

HEAT : India's temperatures are rising measurably. Urban heat islands are worsening. Buildings designed to stay cool through thermal mass, green cover, and shade are not passive cooling experiments. They are buildings designed for the climate that actually exists

AIR : India's outdoor air quality is poor. Indoor air in a sealed, synthetic home is frequently worse. Every design decision about ventilation, materials, and finishes either compounds this problem or addresses it. Natural ventilation and low-VOC materials are not wellness trends. They are air quality decisions.

FOOD : Industrial food systems are under stress. Soil depletion, fragile supply chains, rising food costs. Designing land to grow something : a kitchen garden, a composting system, a connection to where food comes from is a response to a food system that is becoming less reliable.

The high-rise apartment became India's default answer to modern living.

But I want to ask, was it ever actually designed for us?

The urban tower was not built around what humans need to thrive. It was built around what maximises floor space on expensive urban land.

No soil. No morning light unless your flat faces the right direction. No sky that isn't framed by another building. No ability to open a window without the city coming in with it. No connection to anything growing, living, seasonal.

We accepted this trade-off for decades because the city offered proximity. To work, to education, to people. That trade-off made sense.

And then several things changed at once.

Hybrid work dissolved the five-day commute logic. The pandemic showed people what a sealed flat feels like when you are inside it all day, and what it structurally cannot offer you, no matter how beautiful the view. Energy costs began making fully mechanically cooled buildings expensive in ways that compound every year.

And a generation that grew up in apartments reached the age where they could finally ask: what do I actually want to live in?

For a growing number of people, the answer is not a better apartment.
It is something fundamentally different.

More land. More light. A relationship with the season and the soil. A space that gives something back.

The future of living in India will not be denser towers in hotter, more congested cities.
It will be more intentional, more distributed, and more connected to land.

The people building farm stays and sustainable retreats right now are not just building a property.
They are building the proof of concept for how we will want to live.

You have seen them. You may have thought they were decorative.

They are not. Or not only.

The Jaali is India's answer to sun, wind, and privacy, solved simultaneously, in stone, centuries before air conditioning was imaginable.

We have a design heritage that solved the problems we are now paying electricity to solve.

And that, is worth bringing back. 🌿

For 15 years, I had systematically built my entire identity on one pillar. And when that pillar shook, everything shook with it.

Today i believe, That is not strength. That is fragility dressed up as focus.

Real strength, I think, is knowing that you are many things. That no single one of them can take everything away from you if it is temporarily gone.

Today, yes I am an interior designer. I am using my voice to create an impact. I loveee to travel. I care about my body and what I put into it. I sketch sometimes. I am reading again. I am training to run a marathon. I am many things.

And every single one of them makes the work better.

If your entire identity is living in one place right now , just know that all the other parts of you are still there. Waiting to be remembered.
