Cut it out, now!

Exposing both shoulders or trying the single-shoulder cut-out? The cold-shoulder trend is still blowing hot. Here's how to rock it...
It has been aptly said: "The shoulder is the only part of a woman's body that doesn't age." Little wonder then that the cold-shoulder trend refuses to cool down. It debuted on the runways a couple of seasons ago courtesy designers like Altuzarra, Vera Wang and Gabriela Hearst. And it has now trickled down to the mainstream, ruling every high street label, street shop style and even Indian wear.

"This '80s style made a comeback a while ago and is here to stay. What makes it cool is its versatility and universal appeal — it's sexy without being too revealing; feminine and fun without being over the top," says designer Payal Singhal. The best bit? Unlike other trends like croptops, culottes and bralettes, cold shoulder flatters a wide range of body types.

Nothing says fashion like a cut-out in the right place, says designer Nandita Mahtani. "A cut-out shoulder drop waist dress with embellishments can steal the spotlight for an evening event, while a trendy top with cut-out sleeves is ideal for a work and casual day look," she adds.

With new shapes and silhouettes coming in, the cold shoulder is getting a chic new look every time. What to start with? A white cold-shoulder shirt with an A-line skirt; or a solid-coloured cold-shoulder top with bolder print bottoms; or wear ruffled bra straps over an off-shoulder knit dress. Merchandising director with a leading rent-your-look brand Neeharika Makhijani says that it has now transitioned on to your anarkalis and salwar-kurtas. "It's not restricted to western outfits. Kurtis, sari blouses and capes with cut-out shoulders are also in vogue," she mentions.

SHOULDER ON

The latest update on the look is the asymmetric design, notes designer Amit Aggarwal. His pick: the asymmetric cold-shoulder shirt. "Cold-shoulder tops are really upping the game. Pair the trend with other top trends like asymmetric shoulders, sheer necks, corseted bust, ruffles, stripes etc," suggests designer Sonaakshi Raaj. But when it comes to flaunting this trend, 'less is more'. Aggarwal advises: "Since you are already showing some skin, go for modest styling to balance things out."

Ensure the cold shoulder fits the body well, too loose or too tight will kill the look.
Keep hair off the shoulders. Keep it tied up in a high bun or ponytail to divert all the attention to your shoulders.
Put on a pair of shoulder dusting earrings. With an exposed chest and neck, a bold pair of earrings is exactly what you need.
Wearing a strapless bra is a big yes! This will avoid your straps from peeking out time and again.
Tip: Use things in your closet to try this trend. Sport ruffled bra straps under off-shoulder dresses or balloon-sleeved tops over tanks and ganjis.

Day2 runway Shows flaunt and

Day 2 at the ongoing Bangalore Fashion Week (BFW) flaunted glitter and glamour as the designers displayed their finest creations over the runway shows. The day ended with Monapali Sisters’ new collection, Tree of Life, inspired by a cosmic tree. The design showcased a blend of floral and geometric hand-crafted patterns giving a modern yet classic elegance.

"Inspired by cosmic tree our collection is a mix of fabrics, floral and geometric hand-crafted patterns. A fine blend of traditional and contemporary style, the whole look will appeal to all our fashion lovers. Our intention is to inculcate the power of trees and embrace its might in us and we couldn’t ask for a better place than this Garden City to unveil our creation," said designer Mona of the Monapali brand.

Second day of the fashion event kicked off with young designers showcasing their vibrant works in colourful designs and patterns. Various designers like Amukta & Kriti, Rajesh Nepal, Parimal Jayakar and Mini Shangle also displayed their new collections.

"Season after season, our aim to nurture the creativity and talent of young designers has taken a step ahead by helping them collaborate with the experienced ones as well. For this edition, we are proud to introduce names that define the future of fashion but bring in the rich fashion heritage the country has to offer," said Feroz Khan, event director – Dream Merchants who are organising the fashion event.

10 TIPS FOR

tips for

It’s not only the girls that take care of their appearance; the guys want to look their best too! But grooming tips for guys are still not as common, as the beauty tips for girls are, so here are ten beauty tips, just for the men:

1. Take care of your hands

Guys are not looking to have smooth and sensitive hands, but that’s no reason to neglect your hands altogether. Untrimmed nails that are clogged with grease and dirt are not attractive, so pay some attention to your hands and nails and a girl won’t be worrying about what germs might be lurking there.

2. A five o’clock shadow doesn’t work for everyone

A five o’clock shadow can look cool and little bit rebellious, but only if you have the right kind of hair. A patchy, wispy beard just looks like you forgot to shave. All men should also not let the hair grow on their neck, that doesn’t look so great at all.

3. Keep your teeth bright and your breath fresh

Don’t forget that your smile is one of your most winning features. All the grooming in the world can be ruined by yellow teeth and bad breath, so be sure to clean your teeth regularly with whitening toothpaste and don’t skip the visits to the dentist.

4. Keep your skin moisturised

Another one of important beauty tips for men is to moisturise your skin regularly. Rough and rugged is one thing, but dry and cracked is completely another. You don’t need anything fancy, just a basic moisturiser will do; it will keep your skin hydrated and it will keep you looking younger too.

5. Exfoliate your skin

Another simple way to keep your skin looking clear and clean is to exfoliate your face about twice a week with a quality exfoliating scrub. Exfoliating removes all the dead and dry skin from your face and it helps stop acne breaking out too.

6. Use the right shampoo for your hair type

Don’t use the cheapest shampoo you can find, select a gentle shampoo that matches your hair type. It’s not just the fragrance that matters, you should also be looking for ingredients like vitamin E that will nourish and condition your hair, while you wash it.

7. Keep your hair well-trimmed

A lot of men think a haircut is an annual event! Get your hair cut by a proper hairdresser regularly and, if it’s starting to thin, whatever you do, don’t try and hide it with a comb over! A well styled, well cared for head of hair shows that you take care of yourself, and that says a lot about the type of person you are.

8. Get rid of unwanted hair

Next good beauty tip for men is to trim bushy eyebrows, nasal hair and hair sticking out of your ears, if you don’t want to look like a cartoon character. It doesn’t have to be done every day and it doesn’t take a lot of effort, but it can make a huge difference to your appearance.

9. Visit the gym more often

Working out will keep you in physical shape and it will improve your overall appearance. Exercise improves the blood circulation and increases the amount of oxygen that reaches your internal organs and your skin, all of which will help to give you a clean looking, healthy glow.

10. Eat well

What you eat and drink can drastically affect the way you look. Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, drink plenty of water and cut down on the grease and processed foods. Think lean and fresh, when you make your food choices, it will help you look better and hold back the signs of ageing.
