The seeds of Indian textile traditions were sown over 5000 years ago, in the Harappan valley civilisation. Excavations at various Harappan sites uncovered evidence of cotton fibre cultivation weaving tools and needles. The identification of structures as dyeing workshops and the finding of a single fragment of madder dyed cotton, while indigo seeds were uncovered at other sites revealing a civilisation with an advanced knowledge of textiles.

The earliest surviving samples of block printed and dyed cotton textiles can be dated to 9th century BCE. These fragment of trade cloth were uncovered at a burial sites in Fustat, Egypt and their was traced by scholars to Gujarat.
