Barapali is densely populated block in Bargarh district of Odisha. In Barapali, there are more than 1,000 handlooms spread across several cluster pockets, each at a distance of five kilometers from the other. Weavers in this part of Odisha are known for their original Ikat prints on cotton and Tussar silk. Some of them also have advanced traditional weaving machines that have helped them improve their designs and quick pace the weaving process. At Barpali, women help in the tie-and-dye process and also work their hands on handloom.
A cluster of some of the most talented weavers and national awardees, Nuapatna is located about 70 kms from Bhubaneswar in Cuttack district of Odisha. It is home to more than 5,000 weavers who make one of the most intricate tie-and-dye ikat designs on sarees, stoles and dupattas using mostly natural dyes. Weavers in this part of the state actually experiment with patterns, and our more meticulous in their process of extracting thread and weaving Bangalore silk, Malda silk or Tussar sarees.
