Kalamkari printed Cotton shirts

Kalamkari is an ancient Indian technique of hand-painting and block-printing on cotton or silk fabric. The name “kalam” means “pen” and “kari” means “craftsmanship”. The process is intricate and involves approximately 23 steps, including dyeing, bleaching, and applying natural, vegetable-based dyes to create detailed designs. Common motifs include flowers, animals, and scenes from Hindu epics such as the Mahabharata and Ramayana. The art form is primarily practised in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and is known for two styles: Srikalahasti features hand-painted designs, while Machilipatnam uses hand-carved blocks.
Our small series of shirts are screen printed and worn in combination with handwoven striped and checked pleated trousers, made from Tamil Lungis.

The Kediyah is a traditional men’s garment worn by the Debhariya Rabari community.
I upcycled some vintage shoulder pieces that I could get hold of and made one-of-a-kind jackets using leftover denim.

The artisans of Kachchh form a close-knit community that values its members as friends and colleagues. They have learned from nature to make the most of their resources, and their humility and reflection are admirable.
The resilience and dedication of the Kachchh artisans have formed a strong bond and respect within me. I love working with the traditional, hand-woven, organic Kala cotton that is dyed with natural dyes or hand-printed.
Transparency and honesty are essential to me and my business, as form and content are dependent . I want to know about every step in the production of the fabrics I use for my designs. They should be sustainable, fair and made with love. You can feel that in the end product.
Unlike mass-produced garments, which may lack soul, these handmade treasures have an inherent sense of value and longevity. A visit to the Vankar community is always an amazing and transformative experience.
The photos show my visit to Mukesh and his family , who welcomed me so lovingly and kindly and were happy to take the time to show me around their villages. In the first picture, Mukesh’s brother is helping a neighbor tie the turban for their wedding, to which I was also invited.

Forever grateful
