Pashma Pashmina — The Inclusive Contemporary All-Season Pashmina

The vintage “Kashmiri” Pashmina is now an expression of ostentatious elitist conceit.

Intricately hand-embroidered Pashminas have limited utility and can be worn only in cold weather with ethnic wear for weddings and other occasions.

Pashma refashions the Pashmina as an inclusive all weather contemporary style statement that is relevant every day anywhere in the world. It provides comfortable luxury at a workplace or an evening in Paris or Milan.

Pashma Pashminas are exquisitely woven from superfine yarns of genuine Pashmina (cashmere fibres) blended with silk and other natural fibres into sheer weaves that both retain and amplify the essential character of Pashmina — the sensual touch and soft hand feel which is usually compromised in the heavily embroidered “Kashmiri” Pashminas.

Pashma Pashmina prints are in a class of their own. Paisley, floral, abstract, avant-garde inspired by architecture, impressionist painters as well as the graphic textile traditions of Europe, Japan, Bali and India.

Each Pashma printed Pashmina connects you to the finest aesthetic that your sensibilities respond to.

Whatever you wear, a Pashma Pashmina will transform you into a sophisticated fashionista.

What is Italian about Italian Cashmere?

Cashmere (Pashmina), a rare and expensive natural fibre, has been synonymous with luxury and ostentation for several centuries.
Woven and Embroidered Shawls, crafted in the Kashmir Valley of the Indian Sub-continent Pashmina Shawls, symbolised the aristocratic elite's status, wealth, and power in India and across the western world.

The 'Pashm' fibre, therefore, got the generic name 'Cashmere'. However, the producers of this exquisite fibre remained in oblivion.
Changpas are a nomadic tribe inhabiting the Ladakh region of the Himalayas. For centuries, they herded the precious goats at heights of 12000-16000 feet in high altitude deserts. The Changpas are primitive devout Buddhists, and their lifestyle and vocation have hardly changed over the centuries.

A remarkable feature of their vocation is the love and empathy with which they rear their precious livestock of Changpa Goats.

In the 20th century, particularly in the latter half, it was discovered that similar species of the Ladakhi Goats existed in large numbers in other regions like Mongolian steppes (Mongolia and Chinese Inner Mongolia) besides Afghanistan and Iran.

To the herders in these regions, they were animals who could survive the bitter climate of the winters and sustain their food requirements. They knew nothing about the valuable fibre in these goats' undercoat. There was an insatiable demand in the western world generated by the Pashminas woven in Kashmir.

But the fibres from Mongolian Goats was coarse and short, and the artisanal skills of the Kashmiri craftsmen were absent; the Mongolian fibre could not be spun into fine yarns required for weaving the true Pashminas.

This resulted in the evolution of Cashmere Knitwear. A softer and more comfortable alternative to woollen sweaters and jerseys.
Today, 95% of all cashmere fibre is processed into coarse woollen spun yarns and converted into knitwear, mainly in China (PRC).

Consumerism led to the evaluation of cashmere luxury brands, first in Scotland and after that in Italy. So Italian Cashmere is a misnomer as not a single cashmere goat exists in Italy.

Yes, some factories process cashmere into yarns and knitwear, but there is nothing Italian about cashmere.

The authentic Pashmina (Cashmere) fibre is still from Ladakh and is still spun and woven by traditional methods in India.

Sustainable Luxury of Cashmere

Cashmere fibres are a rapidly depleting natural resource.

In most genuine cashmere producing regions small herds of goats are owned by independent nomadic herders. Due to the extreme hardship that the herders have to face with little scope of prosperity, the younger generations of their families are not taking up their traditional vocation. This has led to smaller fibre harvests and continuously rising prices.

Yet the demand for cashmere apparel and accessories is exploding year on year, in some measure due to the intrinsic properties of this luxurious fibre as well as the aspirational needs of the e-connected marketplace of the modern consumer.

Cashmere must be recycled to meet this demand. Both pre-consumer and post-consumer sources have to be exploited fully to address the needs of social and environmental sustainability.

It is easier said than done as virgin cashmere is a fragile and short fibre having an average length of 30-34 mm for all origins.

When recycled, the length of the fibre is further reduced to an average of 18-20 mm.

It is impossible to spin a good quality, commercially viable 100% recycled cashmere yarn by any spinning system if the essential tactile and other properties are to be maintained in the yarn.

Blending recycled cashmere fibre with other natural fibres is the way forward.

The CASHMERE MILL initiated this innovation five years ago and developed proprietary technologies to recycle both pre-consumer and post-consumer cashmere fibres and blend them with waste silk, cotton, wool and cellulosic man-made fibres of cotton lint, wood pulp, bamboo, which are bio-degradable and have a minimal carbon footprint.

From superfine to coarser counts, the mill produces yarns, fabrics, apparel, and accessories both knitted and woven – retaining, and more often, enhancing the magic of cashmere in the final product.

The products from the CASHMERE MILL are transparently priced and are compatible with the geo-climatic needs of all regions and all seasons.

The CASHMERE MILL exhibited its innovations at the prestigious Pitti Filati in 2018 and 2019.

Collection of Pashmina aka Cashmere Fibre from Changpa Goats in Ladakh India

The Changpa or Champa are a semi-nomadic Buddhist people found mainly in the Changtang in Ladakh, India.

The cashmere fibre used in Pashma articles comes from Cashmere (Pashmina) animal-hair fibre forming the downy undercoat of the Cashmere/Kashmir/Pashmina goats (Capra hircus laniger) herded by the people of the Changpa tribe.

These goats produce a double fleece that consists of a fine and soft undercoat/underdown hair inter-mingled with a much coarser outer coating of guard hair.

This soft undercoat/underdown hair/fibre is collected during the June - July moulting season which is the start of early summers in Ladakh when the Cashmere goats naturally shed their winter coat.

The Cashmere fibre is collected by hand with a traditional comb that gently removes loose tufts of fiber from the Cashmere goat as the comb is raked through its fleece.

The process is very gentle and does not any discomfort to the cashmere goats.

Pashma | Single Origin Changpa Cashmere Fibre is Sourced Directly from Herders of Changpa Goats

Moult (in British English) or Molt (American English) is a biological process of the shedding (moulting/molting) or casting off of an outer layer or covering and the formation of its replacement. Molting, which is regulated by hormones, occurs throughout the animal kingdom.

The cashmere fibre used in Pashma articles comes from Single Origin Cashmere (Pashmina) animal-hair fibre forming the downy undercoat of the Cashmere/Kashmir/Pashmina goats scientifically called Capra hircus laniger.
