Dr. Brown’s Anti-Colic Feeding Bottle: How It Works
This diagram illustrates the two modes of operation for this “Options+” bottle, which is uniquely designed to grow with your baby.
Figure A: Use with the Vent System (For Anti-Colic Benefits)
The primary feature that sets Dr. Brown’s bottles apart is the two-piece internal vent system (1 & 2). In this mode, the green vent and reservoir tube are installed inside the bottle.
Here is what happens during feeding:
Positive Pressure, Like Breastfeeding (A1): The internal vent is a completely non-vacuum system. This creates a positive flow of milk (marked by the green arrows), which is intended to closely mimic breastfeeding. Your baby can feed at their own pace without fighting the negative effects of a vacuum.
Prevents Air-Milk Mixing (A2): The key function is that air is channeled from the collar, through the green vent system, and directly into the area above the liquid (A2). The air never mixes with the breast milk or formula.
How Parents Can Check: Bubbles (A3): This is a crucial sign. A steady stream of tiny bubbles will rise and escape into the back of the bottle. This is normal and a sign the vent is working. These bubbles are not entering the milk the baby is drinking. This is designed to eliminate air bubbles from the feed, which is linked to reducing colic, spit-up, burping, and gas.
Figure B: Use without the Vent System (As Your Baby’s Feeding Matures)
A major benefit for parents is that as a baby’s feeding becomes more developed, you have the flexibility to remove the vent system.
In this mode:
Teat-Based Venting (B1): Once removed, the bottle functions like many standard vented teat bottles. The venting is handled directly through small openings at the base of the silicone teat (teat venting).
Convenience (B2): This offers a simpler, faster feeding experience when the intense anti-colic benefits of the vent tube are no longer a primary need. Many parents find this to be a convenient transition option, as there are fewer parts to wash and reassemble.
This diagram helps visualize exactly how this bottle is designed to prevent gas and adapt to your baby’s needs over time.
