GHARARA, A traditional outfit that holds significant cultural importance in the history of Rampur, an erstwhile Muslim princely state deeply influenced by the Awadhi culture of North India.
Gharara became a symbol of elegance and essential courtly attire for aristocratic Muslim women in North India by the mid-19th century. Rampur, with its strong Awadhi influence, fully embraced this fashion.
The picture symbolizes "farshi gharara," a floor-sweeping version, was particularly associated with women attending the zenana durbar (women's court) of the Begum of Rampur.
While no longer an everyday garment, the gharara remains an iconic and popular choice for Muslim women's wedding attire and major festivities in the region, including in Rampur.
