Champaka Sarasi: An eternal mark of love

Champaka Sarasi, in Malandur, Shivamogga, is one such historical landmark.

History says that the Queen of Keladi who was facing public accusations was heartbroken and had committed su***de here. In her memory, the King of Keladi, Venkatappa had built the Champaka Sarasi pond with stone.

The King married a beautiful young girl named Champaka who was from a lower caste at the Anandapura fort. She was accused of wrongdoings by the citizens of the state and when the King also had come to believe that, she was heartbroken and committed su***de by drinking diamond powder mixed with milk.

Later when the King came to realise that he misunderstood his queen due to the citizens, he erected the monument to express his everlasting love for Champaka.

Baijnath Temple: The Lord of Physicians
------------------
The Baijnath temple derives its name from ‘Baijnath’ as the Vaidyanath version of Lord Shiva is worshipped here. Vaidyanath is Shiva’s avatar as the ‘Lord of Physicians’ (‘vaid’ means ‘physician’) and devotees with all manner of ailments pray at this temple in search of a cure.

Built in 1204 CE, the temple has survived the numerous earthquakes that have rocked this region for centuries and destroyed many great temples like it. The Kangra region was also extremely wealthy due to its location on the trade routes from Kashmir, Punjab and Tibet. Numerous temples were built by local kings and prosperous merchants here; sadly, most of them have been destroyed by earthquakes over time. We don’t know of the early history of Baijnath or why it was built exactly where it stands; we can only deduce its story from snippets of the past.

There are two stone inscriptions inside the temple known to historians as ‘Baijnath Prasastis’. These inscriptions tell us that the shrine was built in 1204 CE by two wealthy merchants who were ardent devotees of Lord Shiva, Ahuka and Manyuka, even though some historians believe there may have been a shrine here as early as the 9th century CE.
Translated, this is what the inscriptions say.

" In his country, there is a well-known merchant, Manyuka, son of Siddha. Of him, whose devotion to Mahesa was constant and whose conduct was pure, there was the mother called Chinna.

Whose younger brother is Ahuka, whose wealth is undivided from his brother and who is solely intend on doing good deeds; and whose wife named Gulha is free from censure, and remains busy in honouring all the guests."

Gondeshwar Temple.

The Gondeswar Temple is an 11th-12th century Hindu temple located in Sinnar, Nashik district, Maharashtra. It features a panchayatana plan; with a main shrine dedicated to Shiva; and four subsidiary shrines dedicated to Surya, Vishnu, Parvati, and Ganesha.

HISTORY:

The Gondeshwar temple was built during the rule of the Seuna (Yadava) dynasty, and is variously dated to either the 11th or the 12th century. Sinnar was a stronghold of the dynasty during their pre-imperial period, and modern historians identify it with Seunapura, a town established by the Yadava king Seuanchandra.

Architecture

The Gondeshwar temple is built in the Bhumija style, in form of a panchayatana complex, which features a main shrine surrounded by four subsidiary shrines. The temple is situated on a rectangular platform that measures 125 x 95 feet.

The temple complex was originally surrounded by a wall, which is now mostly destroyed. The main shrine is dedicated to Shiva, and contains a large linga. The shrine and the Nandi pavilion facing it are located on an elevated plinth. The mandapa (pavilion), which has porches on three sides, acts as the entrance to the temple. The shrine has a Nagara-style shikhara (tower), whose finial is no longer preserved. The walls of the temple depict scenes from the ancient epic Ramayana. The subsidiary shrines are dedicated to Surya, Vishnu, Parvati, and Ganesha: all of them have a porch. They are rectangular in plan, and include a mandapa, an antarala (vestibule), and the garbhagriha (sanctum).
