Interior designers have extensively used florals and plaids since the 18th century. The different patterns in vivid colours add character to space while still exuding warmth and cosiness.
You, too, can bring in plaids and stripes in three prominent spaces of your home. Here are a few tips:

Living room - Mix of designs in cushions and curtains can give an amazing feel to the over all living space. Over doing checks or plaids can result in look getting spoilt. So select one of the two to play a mix and match.

Kitchen - Accentuate your dining space with table linens and kitchen towels in mini check or pin check. Table linen brings out the best look with checks and solids during winter supper giving the coyness of Christmas coming soon!

Bathroom - Why leave out space where you refresh and pamper yourself daily? You can buy shower curtains with interesting stripe patterns to add a unique charm to your bathroom.

One of the best design choices for the Autumn Winter season.

Plaid never goes out of style in fashion and home decor. But did you know that there are different types of plaids? Here are five popular patterns that you must know:

Gingham - This woven fabric has a checkerboard pattern, with usually one color on a white background. This pattern is often used in dresses, button-down shirts, and tablecloths

Tartan - This pattern, synonymous with Scottish Highlanders, is created with bands of colours in a horizontal and vertical pattern. This pattern is mainly used in apparel, including scarfs, women's dresses, men's suits, etc

Window Pane - As the name suggests, this plaid has a window-pane square pattern, but the checks are larger. This pattern is popular in men's suits and women's tops and dresses

Houndstooth - The Swedish origin plaid has a skewed checkered pattern that resembles a canine tooth. This pattern works well in upholstery, men and women's suits, skirts, coats, and scarves

Madras- This vibrant Indian pattern rose to popularity in the 1800s. Madras plaid, usually in yellow, orange, and white, can be seen on casual shirts and shorts

Every year 800,000 tonnes of dyes are produced worldwide, textile industries being the primary consumer. Effluents from the synthetic dyeing industry account for 20% of water pollution worldwide.

Today textile industries across the globe are waking up to this rising environmental concern and thus inclining towards natural dyes. Among the natural dyes, the herbal dyes produced from plant sources and minerals are an excellent sustainable alternative.

Here's why we should choose herbal dyes:
- Herbal dyes are made from renewable resources such as turmeric, indigo, soap nut etc.
- No chemicals are used in its production
- These dyes are rich, unique, and offer a colour variation
- Herbal dyes have healing benefits on the skin
- These dye colours age well and the mellowed colour still retains the lustre
- These dyes are biodegradable and thus protect the environment

Switch to herbal dyes to reduce the negative impact on the people and environment.

Upcycling and Recycling: Giving Textile Waste a New Lease of Life.

Have you wondered what is upcycling and recycling in the textile industry?

Well, these are important aspects of a 'closed-loop' system where the textile created is later collected and recycled to make the next production batch. This means that the company will always own the product it creates, thus minimising the use of resources and energy.

Recycling means reusing the finished product or the industrial waste to make products of the same value. Recycling also involves breaking down the finished product into raw materials. For example, used garments are shredded into fibres and are respun into yarns for weaving and knitting.

Upcycling, on the other hand, means using unwanted products and industrial waste into newer products of greater value. For example, the discarded patches of fabric are upcycled into a new line of clothing.

Both upcycling and recycling:
- Reduce the consumption of water and natural resources
- Solve the challenge of scarce raw materials
- Reduce waste piling up the landfills
- Reduce environment pollution

Know of brands with a unique upcycling or recycling initiative? We'd love to hear about it! Leave a comment below.

Organic Cotton vs. Conventional Cotton. Know the difference

Organic Cotton has been trending for a while. A bit expensive than conventional cotton, Organic Cotton is used in the manufacturing of clothing, bed linen, and towels. So what makes Organic Cotton different from its counterpart?

Organic Cotton is entirely handpicked and no fibre is hampered in this process. In contrast, conventional cotton is machine-picked as it's a faster process to meet the increasing demand. However, machine picking damages the fibre and also leads to a lot of wastage. The handpicked process of Organic Cotton ensures the durability of the fibres and thus lends a softer feel than the regular cotton.

The repeated cultivation of regular cotton on the same soil lowers the soil quality, thus hampering the crop quality. Farmers have to use heavy irrigation to compensate for the low-quality soil. Being a rotation crop, Organic Cotton doesn't impact the soil quality and thus requires less water.

The increasing demand for cotton compels cotton growers to use genetically modified seeds (GMO), excess chemicals and pesticides to aid faster cultivation. On the other hand, Organic Cotton is grown with natural seeds and without chemicals and pesticides.

Organic Cotton is hypoallergenic, softer and better absorbent than conventional cotton. The durable fabric is safer for the people and the environment, thus making it a sustainable alternative to regular cotton.

5 Most Sustainable Fabrics for Conscious Fashion

The clothing life cycle - production, sales, consumption, disposal - leaves a significant impact on the environment. But our conscious choices can help reduce the carbon footprint.

5 most sustainable fabrics worth considering:

1. Organic Cotton - No synthetic fertilisers and harmful pesticides are used in the production of organic cotton. The hypoallergenic material feels soft and comfortable on the skin.

2. H**p - This fabric requires less water and pesticides and nourishes the soil it grows in. H**p is soft, breathable, and absorbent.

3. Linen - This fabric is made from the flax plant and requires less water, chemicals, and pesticides. The moisture-wicking fabric is a perfect pick for warm weather.

4. Lyocell - This is a biodegradable fibre made by dissolving wood pulp of eucalyptus trees. Tencel by Lenzing uses less water and energy, and recyclable chemicals in its production. The anti-bacterial absorbs moisture and lasts long.

5. Recycled Polyester - This fabric is made from recycled Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which helps save numerous amounts of plastic being dumped in the landfills and oceans. Recycled polyester is also lighter and softer than polyester.

Why choose sustainable fashion?

Take a small step towards protecting you and our planet by choosing sustainable fashion. Conscious fashion ensures maximum use of clothing, minimum waste disposal, and thus lesser harm to the environment.

Here are a few benefits of sustainable fashion:

Saves water and natural resources - Sustainable clothing is made from organic materials and uses efficient production techniques that require less water, energy, chemicals, and pesticides.

Reduces toxic industrial waste - The majority of sustainable fabrics used for manufacturing clothing are produced with a closed-loop system. This process involves reusing the waste from the production process as well as recycling material to produce new clothing.

Saves animal lives - It costs many animal lives to produce clothing made of fur, feather, exotic animal skin, and hair. Sustainable fashion uses eco-friendly and cruelty-free materials that save animal lives.

Ensures fairer and humane working conditions - Sustainability is not just about using eco-friendly materials and production techniques. Conscious fashion also ensures fair wages, safe working conditions, and equal rights for the employees engaged in the entire clothing cycle.

Have you already made that choice? We would love to hear from you.
