Hamaji is a bohemian designer apparel collection- born in Kenya from the Swahili word Hamaji, meaning Nomad. The collection of ready-to-wear jackets, waistcoats, backpacks and handbags have an eclectic nomadic spirit. Threads that are sourced around the world and hand crafted in Kenya. Hamaji is a brand created around preserving ancient textile traditions and nomadic craftsmanship while empowering and supporting local small scale artisans worldwide.

Made to order, made for you. Our artisanal coats & jackets begin their journey when we receive your order. High in the Kullu Valley, they are created in collaboration with Kullvi Whims, a women’s collective carrying forward generations of spinning and weaving traditions.

Many hours are spent at the loom. The wool is worked by hand, the cloth slowly woven at the loom, its motifs and subtle irregularities shaped by the individual maker. Weeks later, something that began in the mountains arrives at your door.

Dear India, this will always be one of my favourite times of the year. 🪷

Three weeks devoted entirely to creating and immersing myself in craft . Long chai breaks with women deep in rural Rajashthan learning about craft traditions, long conversations, laughter, shared meals, embroidery, dye pots bubbling away in the courtyard. Chaos and colour. Peace and noise. A place of beautiful contrast.

Days spent sourcing textiles, watching silk skeins dry in the wind, discovering old techniques that continue to shape every Hamaji collection.

Slowly, quietly, SS27 begins to take form.

Our Sarabi acacia mirror pieces, made from handloom organic cotton woven in Gujarat and botanically dyed with acacia.

Each mirror is individually hand-stitched using the traditional Sh**ha embroidery technique - an ancient craft long practised in Gujarat, where light, thread and cloth come together in quiet celebration of the maker’s hand.

These pieces never made it into the collection, but they’ve remained some of our favourites all the same.

Hannah wears our hand-knitted set - a piece inspired by my mother’s own version, originally made for her by her mother.

Knitted by local women artisans on the foothills of Mt. Kenya using hand-spun peace silk and organic cotton, the top and skirt are panelled with contrasting yarns, creating a beautifully textured finish.
