Today, it is not as powerful as it is often romanticized; it has been facing strong opposition from the state for years and is far from its former influence.
What was once associated with fear is now often presented as a nostalgic and romantic tourist element.
Still, it remains an undeniable part of this land’s complex and striking cultural past.

Nata nel XIX secolo, in periodi in cui lo Stato era debole, si presentava come una forma di “protezione”. Con il tempo si è trasformata in una struttura basata su violenza, estorsioni, legge del silenzio (omertà) e rigide gerarchie familiari.
Oggi non è potente come spesso viene romanticizzata; da anni è al centro di una forte lotta da parte dello Stato ed è molto lontana dall’influenza di un tempo.
Ciò che un tempo incuteva paura oggi viene spesso proposto come un elemento turistico nostalgico e romantico.
Resta comunque una parte innegabile del passato culturale complesso e affascinante di questa terra.
