What does textile regeneration really mean?

For many people, recycling starts and ends with the finished material, but the quality of the final result depends on what happens much earlier in the process.

One of the most important stages is fibre opening. Here, materials are carefully processed to separate and prepare the fibres for the next phases, creating the conditions needed to develop consistent blends and high-quality outputs.

This step requires precision, expertise and a deep understanding of how different materials behave. Every fibre reacts differently, and preserving its value throughout the process is essential to unlocking new application possibilities.

What if waste was the beginning? 🔎

According to the European Environment Agency (EEA), nearly 7 million tonnes of textile waste were generated across the European Union in 2022, equivalent to around 16 kg per person.

At the same time, the EEA estimates that around 85% of household textile waste was not collected separately, making it more difficult for these materials to be reused or recycled.

This raises an important question: when does a textile actually become waste?

Is it when a garment is discarded? When it can no longer be worn? Or when we stop recognizing the value of the materials it contains?

Every textile carries embedded resources: fibres, water, energy, labour, and expertise. Yet much of this value is often lost after a single life cycle.

As regulations evolve and separate collection becomes mandatory across the European Union, the textile industry will face a new challenge: not simply managing larger volumes of discarded materials, but developing the infrastructure, technologies, and partnerships needed to turn them back into resources.

The question is no longer whether textile waste should be recovered, but how effectively the industry will be able to do it.

Pre-consumer and post-consumer textiles are often grouped under the same label: textile waste.

But, in reality, they are two very different worlds ‼️

Pre-consumer materials come directly from manufacturing processes. They are, for example, production scraps, cutting waste, surplus materials that have never reached the market. Their composition is often known, their quality more consistent, and their traceability easier to manage.

Post-consumer materials, on the other hand, have already completed a first life cycle. They come from garments and textile products that have been used, collected, sorted, and prepared for a new transformation process. This makes them a valuable resource, but also a more complex one to work with.

Different origins, different challenges, different opportunities.

Understanding these differences is essential when developing an effective regeneration strategy. Because every material has its own story, and every story requires the right approach to unlock its value.

Before the summer break, we're taking a moment to look back at the first half of the year 👀

Over the past months, we have continued to explore new possibilities for textile regeneration, working with a wide range of materials, developing customized solutions, and expanding the potential applications of regenerated fibres.

From post-consumer cashmere and delicate fabrics to technical materials and alternative inputs, every project has contributed to the same goal: extending the value of existing resources and supporting a more circular approach to material management.

At the same time, we have strengthened our commitment to traceability, impact assessment, and process innovation, continuing to invest in solutions that combine flexibility, quality, and sustainability, while collaborating with a trusted network of partners across the value chain.

This year has also marked the beginning of new opportunities beyond traditional textile applications. By exploring new innovative end uses for regenerated fibres and developing engineered solutions for different industries, we have continued to expand the potential of material regeneration.

Now it's time for a short break before returning with new projects, new challenges and new opportunities to rethink the future of materials.

In this new episode of , we take a closer look at how we work to ensure quality and repeatability throughout our regeneration process.

Every pre- and post-consumer material is first analyzed to understand its characteristics and original production process. Initial regeneration trials are then evaluated by measuring key parameters, including fibre opening and fibre length.

The results help us identify the most effective process settings and define the quality standards to be achieved during production. The final output is then compared with the selected trial to ensure consistency.

By combining material analysis, testing and process control, we can reproduce the same settings when processing similar materials again, working towards consistent and repeatable quality over time.

What if textile regeneration could go beyond textiles? 💡

With Closeoop, we are constantly exploring new possibilities for material recovery. While our roots are in textile regeneration, our vision extends far beyond traditional textile inputs.

Over the past months, we have been testing materials from different industries, including nylon 6.6 climbing ropes, airbag cords, and polypropylene seat belts. Materials that were not originally designed for a second life, yet still hold significant value and performance potential.

The results have opened up new opportunities, demonstrating how regenerated fibres can be transformed into technical nonwoven applications and other innovative solutions.

At the same time, we are expanding our research into natural fibres such as flax and h**p, working to extract increasingly finer fibres and unlock new application possibilities.

We believe innovation is not only about improving existing processes: it's about discovering new ways to give materials a future 🔄

We strongly believe responsibility is connected to every stage of the process, from the way resources are managed within production to the long-term impact generated across the supply chain.

Over the years, in , we have invested in solutions aimed at reducing our environmental footprint, combining regeneration processes with energy-conscious technologies and a more data-driven approach to impact analysis.

Today, this commitment also includes a deeper evaluation of our supply chain through Life Cycle Assessment activities, helping us better understand where impacts are generated and how they can be progressively reduced over time.

Can a flame-retardant fabric become a new textile fibre? The answer is yes.

In this episode of , we take you inside an innovative recycling project developed during the Texploration initiative at .innovation.

Starting from an aramid/viscose flame-retardant fabric, we combined enzymatic and mechanical recycling technologies:
🔹 the viscose component was selectively removed through an enzymatic process;
🔹 the remaining aramid fibres were mechanically regenerated into new staple fibres;
🔹 the regenerated fibres were then blended with virgin material to produce a new tops, ready for spinning.

This project shows how combining different recycling technologies can unlock new possibilities for complex textile blends, extending the life of valuable materials and supporting a more circular textile industry.
