🇬🇧 Some routes push an athlete to their limits more than others.
“Free Rider” (1,000 m, 7c, 33 pitches) is certainly one of them.
Opened in 1998 by Alexander and Thomas Huber in the majestic Yosemite Valley, it is a test of endurance, mental toughness, and planning. A sinuous masterpiece of cracks that strikes fear into anyone daring to stand at the base of El Capitan.

A few days ago, Alessandra Prato completed the route with her partner Andrea Corbetti. No experience with big walls, with nights spent in makeshift bivouacs, or with heavy packs. Add to these the limited time available before the return flight.

Over five days of adventure, however, the elements aligned. “My previous expedition, in Patagonia, ended too early due to an injury that left lingering doubts about my abilities”, said Ale. “After regaining my confidence, I decided to attempt such an ambitious project. The rock conditions were good, and our progress gave us confidence. For me, Freerider is the climb of self-awareness; I will continue to raise the bar.”⠀

Aperta nel 1998 da Alexander e Thomas Huber, nella maestosa Yosemite Valley, è un esame di resistenza, tenuta mentale e pianificazione. Un capolavoro sinusoidale di fessure che spaventa chiunque osi presentarsi alla base di El Capitan.

Pochi giorni fa Alessandra Prato ha completato l’opera con il compagno Andrea Corbetti. Nessuna esperienza con le big wall, con le notti trascorse in bivacchi improvvisati o con i sacchi pesanti. A queste difficoltà si aggiunge il poco tempo a disposizione, prima del volo di ritorno.

In cinque giorni di avventura però, gli elementi si sono allineati “La mia spedizione precedente, in Patagonia, era finita prima del dovuto per un infortunio che ha lasciato degli strascichi sulle mie convinzioni. Dopo aver ritrovato la fiducia, ho deciso di provare un progetto così ambizioso. Le condizioni della roccia erano buone, e la progressione ci ha dato fiducia. Freerider è per me la salita della consapevolezza, continuerò ad alzare l’asticella.”⠀
