Already among the finds dating back to the Bronze Age, the anklet is certainly one of the ornaments most common in India during the Sunga period, or the dynasty that ruled India approximately between 185 BC and 73 BC. The characteristics and the material chosen gave an idea of the status of the woman who wore the anklet, which was often embellished with bells, shells or stones that produced gods sounds during the dances. But it is the women of Rajasthan who wear the heaviest anklets in the world, which they represent a sign of recognition attributable to a specific tribe. In India, but also among some populations of Africa, the anklet is linked to the ritual of marriage and is the emblem of a bond that sees women almost as a commodity, in fact often the jewel is also the bride’s dowry. But, if we think about how this ornament came up with us, to date, symbolizes the exact opposite, especially in the Western world, in which, during the Middle Ages, it was strictly forbidden to show your ankles in public. Finally, in China the anklet is a talisman for children, who have to wear it to chase away the children evil spirits. So, summing up the meanings, the anklet is definitely an esoteric object and powerful, able to seduce and bewitch. A must-have summer jewel with an exotic charm, also adopted by the hippie people who gather periodically in the various goa-psytrance festivals around the world.
