Before the road, there was a reason.

This weekend, Notting Hill Carnival marks 60 years on the road.

What began in a neighbourhood shaped by racial tension, poor housing and social division became one of the world’s great expressions of Caribbean culture.

In 1966, Rhaune Laslett brought a community into the streets. Trinidadian musician Russell Henderson and his steelband brought pan. People came out of their homes. They followed. They danced.

The road had begun.

Across the decades came mas. Steelpan. Calypso. Soca. Jamaican sound system culture. Generations of Caribbean people in Britain turning the streets of London into a place of creativity, resistance, memory, freedom and belonging.

Sixty years later, we are still on the road.

For Sagaboi, this history is not simply something to celebrate. It is something to remember, protect and carry forward.

Over Carnival weekend, we will be telling a little more of that story.

Every culture has its architects.

The people whose talent reshaped not only music or fashion, but the way an entire people saw themselves.

Today, we open the Sagaboi Archives with one of the greatest to ever do it.

His Eminence, The Mighty Sparrow.

Born Slinger Francisco, Sparrow didn’t simply write calypso. He expanded what Caribbean culture could sound like, look like and become. Through wit, fearless storytelling and unmistakable style, he helped place our voices firmly on the world’s stage.

For us, this is more than a birthday tribute.

It’s a thank you.

Thank you for the music.

Thank you for the courage.

Thank you for the swagger.

Most of all, thank you for reminding generations of Caribbean people that style was never the point.

Identity was.

Happy 91st Birthday, Sparrow.

ANANSI IS A SAGA BOY.

Long before social media.
Long before influencers.
Long before anybody spoke about “personal brand.”

There was Anansi.

The spider-man of Caribbean folklore.

The trickster.
The storyteller.
The survivor.

Small in size.
Big in spirit.

A figure carried from West Africa to the Caribbean and passed from generation to generation through stories, memory and imagination.

For Anansi, Alicai Harley’s celebration of Jamaican culture and folklore, Sagaboi had the honour of designing the costumes worn by Anansi himself, alongside looks worn by Alicai.

Set against the Hill & Gully Riddim, one of the most influential rhythms in Jamaican music, the project feels like a conversation between past and present. Folklore. Fashion. Music. Memory.

The starting point was Jamaica’s national dress, the Quadrille.

As inspiration.

As proof that our stories still have somewhere to go.

And to our saga bwoy , a longtime collaborator and the stylist behind the project.

This is what excites us most.

Not simply making clothes.

But helping Caribbean culture see itself.

Before they called it cool.

Two saga boys, Lord Kitchener and Mighty Sparrow bringing calypso, steel band, tailoring, rhythm and pure Caribbean presence to London’s Carnaby Street in 1971.

Sharp suits.
Quick wit.
Music in d road.
Style with soul.

What makes this footage so special is not just the performance, but the ease of it all. The confidence. The joy. The cultural fluency.

Kitch and Sparrow weren’t chasing cool.
They were cool.
