When I first moved to Rome I was, as many others before me, impressed by the quantity of different marbles the city had accumulated through the years: Anatolia, Egypt, Abyssinia, Greece, Spain, Aquitaine we’re only a few of the many legendary places from where the knights, emperors, kings and popes of Rome had taken marbles in their quest for immortality.

This Roi du Lac collection is our personal exercise to balance the delicacy of a lily flower with the geometric lines of a Mongolian carpet, the sinuosity of a Japanese fish with the most traditional stripes in man’s sartorial universe - ultimately, the tuff stone and the marble.

Among the many improvements that marked the Edo period in Japan, is the creation of the first ships in the Western style. These ships began to be built in Japan early in the 17th century, by the first Shagun, Tyeyasu, of the Tokugawa family, under the supervision of William Adam’s, who was an English pilot, the survivor from a Dutch ship. Though imprisoned for a time, Adams eventually gained his liberty and settled in Japan in 1599. Two ships, one of 80 and the other of 120 tons, were the first built under the direction of that of this interesting intruder. This moment in history is described in Claude Deruet’s portrait of Hasekura Tsunenaga in Rome, from 1615.

In the Mughal period, horses were of enormous military and economic significance, especially as the army’s cavalry was instrumental in expanding the empire. Horses from present-day Iran, Turkey, Tibet, the Middle-East and Central Asia were traded in fairs, with the Arabian and Turkemene breeds being especially prized. Miniature paintings in manuscripts such as the Baburnama, dating back to the sixteenth century, contain illustrations of horses in numerous military and ceremonial contexts. (Cit. Shrey Maurya)
