✨Tonight, my dear friends, is the night.✨

In just a few hours, we step into the Belle Époque room of ‘Gusto for an evening shaped by Fitzgerald’s world.
A century after The Great Gatsby first appeared, we gather to honour it not with grand gestures, but with good company, fine music, thoughtful words, and a cocktails list revisiting the classics of Prohibition.

Our programme awaits:
• a brief reflection on Gatsby’s enduring spell;
• a lighter wander through the drinking culture of the 1920s;
• a mixology demonstration with Pasquale Viscito;
• live jazz drifting between readings;
• and, to close, a touch of friendly rivalry in the Gatsby trivia round – with a bottle of Champagne for the winner!

Black tie is encouraged – not as a costume, but as a small act of ceremony, a way of signalling that the ordinary has been set aside for something a little finer.

To all who are joining us: I can’t wait to raise a glass with you this evening.
To those following from afar, thank you for lending this little adventure your interest and goodwill.

Here’s to the night. 🥂

The Aviation ✈️
—or rather, for those attending, the “Improved Aviation”—

is just one of the exquisite cocktails that master mixologist Pasquale Viscito ( ) will be serving at our black-tie soirée this Saturday at ‘Gusto, Rome.

A whisper of gin, violet liqueur, lavender syrup, and lemon – a drink as ethereal as the Jazz Age itself.

Curious to discover the rest of the menu?
If you’re in Rome, join us for an evening of cocktails, jazz, and elegance.

✨ One Hundred Years of Gatsby ✨
This autumn we gather in Rome to celebrate the centenary of The Great Gatsby – a novel that still whispers of glamour, longing, and the art of living well.

🍸 Saturday 15 November – in the belle époque rooms of ’Gusto, a black-tie soirée will unfold: a welcome glass of prosecco, an aperitivo rinforzato, the sparkle of conversation, and a prohibition-era cocktail in hand. Two short talks – on Fitzgerald’s enduring legacy and the spirits of Prohibition – will punctuate the evening, interwoven with readings and closing in a playful trivia for a bottle of Champagne.🍾

🏛️ Weekend programme – optional heritage walks, café and cocktail stops on Friday and Saturday daytime (with time to return and change), and Sunday morning will allow us to savour Rome at its most elegant.

💶 Tickets: €25 – payable on the night – including drinks, canapés, and all programme elements (except optional weekend activities).

🤵‍♂️👗🤵‍♀️ Suggested dress code: Black tie.

✍️ RSVP now via the link in bio – places are limited, and we should be delighted to welcome you.

✨A Note on Accommodation 🧳+ info on pricing💶✨
🤵‍♂️ With our Black Tie weekend fast approaching, a few of you have asked about places to stay in Rome. Alas, as a resident I’m a bit out of the loop when it comes to hotels and guesthouses. But for those who might wish to save on accommodation I shall be happy to put you in touch, should you care to share. Simply send me a DM.

🗝️ You can then make your own arrangements as you see fit: I shan’t be meddling in the finer points of who books what, how payments are split, or who claims the room with the best view!

🚇 My only modest suggestion is to seek lodgings in the historic centre, or at least close to a metro stop (lines A or B). Staying in the centre allows you to walk to much of what we’ll be doing, while the metro runs until the very civilised hour of 1.30am on weekends.

💶 A few considerations that may help you decide on how many nights to stay, or what budget to factor in:
The only event requiring advance booking is the Saturday soirée: €25 (€5 deposit, €20 on the night). This fee includes the event and talks, but also:
– a glass of prosecco 🥂
– canapés 🥪
– one prohibition-era cocktail 🍸
– a small spread of more substantial dishes, in the spirit of what we Italians call ‘aperitivo rinforzato’ 🍴

📅 As to the weekend’s rhythm:
• Friday – a first gathering late afternoon/evening (possibly another opportunity for black tie).
• Saturday – daytime activities around Rome, then time to dress for our main event: the black tie soirée at Gusto.
• Sunday – perhaps a convivial breakfast, brunch, or even a short activity before everyone disperses.

🤝 So – if the idea of shared lodgings appeals, do get in touch. Who knows? It may tip the scales for those still hesitating. ✨

✨ A Black Tie Affair in Rome – 14–16 November 2025 ✨

It gives me great pleasure to confirm that the votes are counted, the date is set, the venue secured. Our gathering to mark the centenary of The Great Gatsby will unfold within the Belle Époque room of – a setting of velvet, ornate chandeliers, and old-world charm.

On the Saturday evening, we shall step into an atmosphere of conversation, literature, and cocktails – black tie attire, naturally, setting the tone. Around this main event, the weekend will hold further diversions: a glimpse of Rome’s hidden speakeasy world, visits to historic hotels, and, if fortune smiles, a guided tour of the Opera house.

For now, mark the dates, press your shirts, and ready your bow ties or evening gowns. Further details – of programme, cocktails, and convivialities – shall follow presently.

Final night on board. For four days we were afforded the rare luxury of living in a world apart – a floating island of some 40,000 tons adrift between New York and Southampton.
The mood was tinged with that bittersweet end-of-voyage feeling. Friendships were struck, addresses exchanged and vague promises made of reunions that, seasoned travellers knew, would likely dissolve after two or three polite notes. So, as glasses were raised to toast these new acquaintances, many of us were also, quietly, saying adieu.

It was during a solitary stroll along the deck after dinner that I encountered her.

She walked alone, her coat open just enough to reveal pearls resting with unstudied grace at her collarbone. Her impeccable Marcel wave gleamed under the moonlight, but her eyes, fixed on the wooden deck beneath her, suggested a mild distress.
We had, quite inexplicably, not seen each other before – and yet here she was, as if conjured for the final chapter of the voyage.

“May I be of any help?”

She looked up, smiled faintly. “It’s my glove,” she said. “I seem to have lost it on my way to dinner. I thought perhaps I’d dropped it out here.”
Naturally, I offered to assist. For some twenty minutes we circled the deck together, speaking of the ship, of the voyage, of this curious and self-contained life afloat.
As we turned the corner near the stern, an officer began walking toward us. I felt, quite absurdly, a pang of dread – terrified he might be approaching with the missing glove in hand, ready to shatter this improbable interlude.

But no. He passed us by, stopping instead to confer with a gentleman lounging by the rail. I exhaled – rather too visibly, I fear – and caught the quick lift of her mouth as she suppressed a smile. She had noticed.

And in that moment, I realised I did not want the glove to be found. Not yet, at least. Let it remain a minor mystery, if it might buy us another circuit of the promenade. Perhaps just enough time to gather the courage to offer her a drink – a small consolation for the glove that remained ever so artfully elusive.
