svartbysvart is a reykjavík based slow-fashion brand offering fully unisex artisan clothing and accessories, all individually hand made in our reykjavík atelier
we believe in giving our customers something which has soul and meaning, instead of something which is mass-produced or made without effort. we are highly considerate about the environment and always strive to push our sustainable standard

s. all our items are made locally in-store, using eco-friendly, natural, organic and/or recycled materials for our products. most of our products are made to order and we never produce more quantity than necessary. we avoid aesthetic trends and only make pieces that we consider timeless. founded by scandinavian multi-artist and designer marko svart, the brand's aesthetics show striking nordic minimalism and a modern take on fashion and design, taking inspiration from nature, art, and architecture.

i knew this day would come. when i have to come clean and stop hiding...
for the longest time, i have heard the sounds of crustaceans clicking in my brain. at first i though i was going crazy, but soon i realized they were actually sending me messages from the deep.
these messages guided me to an undisclosed location where, on midsummer's eve, a massive, powerful and ancient lobster emerged from the ocean 🌊
since then, i have been under his rule, doing tasks in his name.

i cannot resist it anymore.
i am dedicating my life to the one, ultimate, imminent truth:

about a week ago we left ajiki roji - our home, atelier and shop space for the past 10 month - to continue our journey through life.
we drove away with tears in our eyes that evening, but despite the sad goodbyes, we left with a sense of fulfillment and deep gratitude.

when we arrived, the community felt somewhat scattered but we moved in with the intention to open our hearts and home to our new neighbors, and it didn't take long until they carefully started doing the same.

this whole experience and every small moment - both good and bad - would not have been the same without the friendship from the people around us; our new family.
they brought warmth, meaning, and connection into our everyday lives and we are so honored to have met such beautiful souls and inspiring artists.

we had a great time together, didn't we?

okasan, thank you for inviting us from the other side of the world, welcoming us with open arms, and supporting us in finding our way in an unfamiliar place.
we are so very grateful.

we are exhausted, emotional and emptied,
and we will take a small break from here.

あじき路地に移ったのを今でも覚えています。
今も覚えているのに、10ヶ月という月日が過ぎ、
すでにまた、新しい旅に足を向けて歩き始めています。
この旅は、路地での経験を踏まえてよりいっそう素晴らしいものに
なるだろうと思うと共に、この場所で得た沢山の思い出や仲間たちの温かい思いやりを思い出して寂しくもなります。
これらの経験は彼ら無しでは得難く、感謝しかありません。
ありがとうございました。

それから、おかあさん。わたしたちを優しく、受け入れてくれて
ありがとうございます。慣れない土地で戸惑う２人をいつも気遣い、支えてくださって本当に嬉しかったです。

みなさんに会いに何度でも戻ってきます。

my personal favorite from this collection; isohirvenjäkälä necklace, hand carved out of walnut wood 🤎🫎

this piece is inspired by a plywood necklace i made for my 'metsä collection' in 2020.
since then, i have had this shape in my mind and in my notebooks, and i've been waiting for an opportunity to reinvent it in a new material.
once i got my hands on this beautiful walnut wood, i knew immediately what it was meant to be.

the name comes from an arctic-alpine lichen whose erect or upright, leaflike habit gives it the appearance of moose antlers. its finnish name 'isohirvenjäkälä' literally translates to 'big moose lichen'. isn't it cute ??
it's my favorite lichen and it wasn't until after i fell in love with it that i found out it's name elsewhere translates to 'icelandic lichen' (Cetraria islandica). it was a funny coincidence i thought... 🌱
