Rugby is big in Japan.

And it’s rugby season. Thick woven cotton jerseys up top, short athletic shorts below. Borrowing from the late ’80s and early ’90s, when rugby kits had a little more character and looked just as good off the pitch.

The ’96 Tokyo A.C. Rugby Sevens Training Jersey by HBN Sport*

Taking its cues from the great sevens kits of the 1990s, particularly Fiji’s ’96 jersey, the Tokyo Athletic Club Rugby Training Jersey looks back to a time when something made for the pitch could just as easily find its way onto the street.

Cut from a custom cotton-weave fabric, it features an embroidered HBN Sport* chest logo, screen-printed Japanese “Human” graphic through the centre, oversized back number and Japanese flag at the neck. The irregular stripe pattern gives it the character of an old training jersey discovered rather than designed.

Rugby jerseys used to be more fun. Strange colours, bold graphics, training kits worn by international and club sides that, as a kid, you could never quite get your hands on.

That’s the idea behind the ’92 Tokyo Athletic Club Rugby Training Jersey. Part of the HBN Sport* ethos: making the sportswear we remember wanting, but could never find.

The ’92 Tokyo Athletic Club Rugby Training Jersey by HBN Sport*

Inspired by vintage Canterbury rugby jerseys from the ’80s through early 2000s, HBN Sport* approached this jersey as an imagined piece from that period. Something that might have belonged to the training squad of a small international side, discovered years later in the back room of an old sporting-goods shop

Article 008 - Rugby in Japan

Rugby’s history in Japan began within Yokohama’s foreign settlement. In 1866, British military officers and Western residents established the Yokohama Foot Ball Club, recognised as one of Asia’s earliest rugby clubs. The club later became part of the Yokohama Country & Athletic Club, which remains active today. At the time, however, rugby was still largely confined to the expatriate community.

That began to change in 1899, when Cambridge graduates Edward Bramwell Clarke and Ginnosuke Tanaka introduced rugby to students at Keio University. When Keio faced Yokohama’s foreign players two years later, a game imported through the treaty ports became a point of contact between Japanese students and the foreign community.

From Keio, rugby spread across Japan’s university system. Rivalries between leading institutions turned the sport into a powerful expression of school identity, connecting generations of students and alumni. After the war, major companies began employing players and establishing their own teams, extending rugby’s influence from university campuses into Japan’s corporate and sporting culture.

Japan also developed a playing style of its own. In the 1970s, national team manager Shigeru “Shiggy” Konno argued that Japanese players should not attempt to imitate the size and physicality of European teams. Their advantage lay instead in low tackling, quick passing and greater speed around the ball. His philosophy helped shape the high-tempo rugby for which Japan would later become known.

By the time Japan hosted Asia’s first Rugby World Cup in 2019, the sport had travelled far beyond its origins in Yokohama. Under the banner of “One Team,” the multicultural Brave Blossoms reached the quarter-finals, energising long-time supporters and attracting a new generation of fans.

Rugby’s heritage in Japan is therefore one of adaptation and reinvention. What began as a game played within Yokohama’s foreign community became embedded in the country’s universities, companies and national sporting culture. Over time, Japan transformed an imported sport into a tradition unmistakably its own.
