Night Doesn´t Settle In Shinjuku

Rock Punk Disco Is a book by Watanabe Katsumi (渡部 勝美) that dives into the after-hours pulse of Shinjuku, a place where the city loosens its grip and everything starts to blur. Not in a romantic way, more like something raw and unresolved. Pictures capture faces caught mid-expression, bodies leaning into the night, people suspended between movement and stillness.

That’s the world Katsumi Watanabe moved through as part of the current. His photographs, later gathered in Rock Punk Disco, trace two decades of Tokyo’s underground life, from the 1960s through the 1980s, moving through clubs, streets, and everything in between.
