Day 5 of the SDTCT.

Jess got off trail today due to a pulled hip flexor. Soft sand, steep climbs, long water carries, desert heat, and high mileage out the gate make for very tough conditions. Not to mention it’s the middle of Winter! Most of us aren’t in hiking shape this time of year. We will miss you Jess!

Here’s what you missed 😉 a loooong and winding road walk that snaked downhill for 16 miles. A trailhead parking lot where we used the pit toilets and napped. Zach found a tick on him. gross 😷 now we're all paranoid 🐜.

Leaving the trailhead break, we thought surely we would head out in the direction of all the hikers that walked past us, but no. We walked a dirt road in the opposite direction. Disappointment quickly turned into awe as the road revealed gorgeous views and easy walking. 🌅 We crossed our first river of the trip and we almost walked right past it! Sheesh. My eyes lingered back at the water and Jabba said “Jolly you want to make a memory?” So we walked the 10 feet back and soaked our feet. Ahhh 😌 cold clean water🧊.

With fresh feet, we climbed 800 feet and were greeted at the top by a beautiful single-track trail. A choir of frogs sang their song under an orange sunset as the trail wound down to their homes in the valley below.

Night overtook us while we sat and listened to their song. 🐸 🎶

One last climb for the day under a full moon with the promise of pizza at the top. The notes for this hike all mention being able to order delivery pizza to this trailhead. And order we did! 2 pizzas and a 2L of Coke made for some happy boys. The cherry on top was the nice camp host who let us sleep under the picnic tables as long as we were out before 6. Done! ✔️

Day 3 of the San Diego Trans Country Trail.

We woke up to coyotes yipping just outside our camp. There’s something about their songs that almost feel like home. It’s funny how even as close as they were to us we don’t feel scared but energized. Excited to greet the sun with them and start a new day. 🏜️

Today was our first single track of the trip and it started straight from camp up a steep climb. We have one natural water source around mile 6, so we climb with little water in the cool morning to make this elevation a bit easier. That was almost a HUGE mistake! Zach and I get to the spring first and spend 10 minutes looking for it. So far the only signs it might be here are some bigger trees and dense bushes. Jabba arrives right was we find a trickle, maybe 25 yards and a thick bushwhack from where the spring was parked on our map. And when I say trickle I mean you couldn’t get your shoes wet if you tried. To shallow for bottles and pots but Jabba had a clean ziplock that could capture around 1/2 liter every 30 seconds or so. We spent the next hour filtering 4 liters to carry and chugging a couple liters each. Heavy but worth it as the heat of the day approached.

More and more climbing, filled with music, a soft breeze, and some stories between us.

18 miles in and we reached our 2nd water cache of the hike. Whew all 5 gallons are here! A quick break then off to find camp. We make 3 beautiful miles under a full moon 🌕 up a tight slot canyon. The moon is so bright there’s no need for headlamps. Just gorgeous as we make our way up a couple rock scrambles and follow the canyon up till it disappears and we finish the climb on single track. The peak reveals a hidden community of lights. Very unexpected! We felt like we were in the middle of nowhere.

It’s gonna be a cold night… at camp I have on all my layers and gloves. I hardly want to finish my mashed potatoes I’m so cold. Thermometer reads 38° at 8pm. 🥶 I need to get in my quilt and try and fall asleep. 💤

Day 2 of the San Diego Trans County Trail.
Mosquitoes in the desert—that’s a new one. Spent the night fighting what felt like a single mosquito 🦟, but I was too stubborn to set up my tent. Do any of y’all have that piece of gear you love so much you almost don’t want to use it for fear it will break and you can’t get another one? That’s me with my DCF “The Two” by . ⛺️

Breakfast was a Brown Sugar Cinnamon Protein Pop-Tart! Did you hear about these? Official protein Pop-Tarts? The brown sugar is very yummy; blueberry protein… not so much.

Today we walked the wash all day towards Borrego Springs. Six miles into the day, we arrived at our first water cache: 5 gallons for the four of us to make it 17 miles to town. We packed out 4 liters each and chugged the rest. We wandered back off into the desert, cross-country, with sloshing bellies. The heavy rains from the weeks before our trip made the desert come alive with wildflowers. Their pollen clung to our shoes and wafted into our noses—a welcome scent, as our hiker funk had already begun to set in.

The terrain remained unchanging for a majority of the day, and temps in the 80s made for a “headphone day.” We needed something to propel us forward in the soft, sandy wash and take our minds off the sweat dripping down our faces and backs.

We were rewarded with our first vista of the hike and soaked it in over lunch. Spam, Fritos, and Sour Skittles. This is the life. 🏜️

A road walk led us to and thru Borrego Springs. A quick dinner, resupply, and water top-off, then we were off to find camp outside of town. The almost-full moon illuminated our first big climb of the hike. Tomorrow morning, we will make our way up and over! 25 miles on the day.

Day 1 of the San Diego Trans County Trail.

After an early flight, setting up two water caches, and filling up on Taco Bell, we arrived at the Salton Sea around 1 p.m. The eastern terminus of the SDTCT. We plan to walk 155 miles west across San Diego County to the Pacific Ocean on a route hiked by very few.

The first few miles were cross-country, skirting around this boom-and-bust town until we made our way into an arroyo, our home for the next two days. The Navy’s Blue Angels kept us company as we made our way up the sandy wash zooming close overhead, spraying smoke, and performing acrobatics. Another troop of airborne entertainers came not long after, sporting paragliders and fans. ‘This trail is awesome already!’ we shouted.

Night came quickly, a drawback of winter hiking, but the sunset reminded us why we love the desert 🏜️. It lingered on the horizon until we got to camp, around 12 miles in on Day 1. Soon the moon rose, almost full, and illuminated our camp until morning. Great weather had me excited to cowboy camp, but right as I dozed off… buzzZZzz… it’s gonna be a long night… 🦟

Kumano Kodo day 2: 16 miles

Our day starts in a 150-year-old Japanese home on our thin floor futons and tatami mats. Our host brought us breakfast: coffee, miso soup, bagels, an egg, salad, and fruit. Then we are out the door. A 2-mile 1500-foot climb started our hike on this cold day. At the top, a stand with coffee and mochi greeted us along with the sun 🌞 I love mochi! 😊 We met many other hikers along with a couple from the US living in Tokyo. Very cool! Our hike is relatively easy today with a good lunch at a wayside. It’s persimmon season so I eat fresh persimmon candy and drink another coffee for the afternoon push to catch the bus. Our miles come slowly as we stop for photos and remark at shrines and collect stamps in our pilgrim passport. The last 2 hours of the day come quickly and we put in headphones to lock in and hike to catch the bus in time. With 15 minutes to spare, we wait in the 48° cold to catch the very full bus to Hongu which will be our home base for the next two nights. Coming into this hike I had no idea how far in advance everyone books. The guy next to me on the bus said they booked their accommodations back in March! We booked 3 weeks ago so we had to stay at what few places remained. Dinner is sushi and sake 🍣

Kumano Kodo Day 1: 6 miles.

Today we traveled from Osaka to Tanabe to start our trek of the Kumano Kodo. A high-speed train and one bus later we arrived with our fellow pilgrims at the start. We were greeted by good weather and beautiful shrines that captured our wonder and has us excited for the miles to come. The trail is steeeep, like the Appalachian Trail, with lots of rocks and roots in our path, making for hard miles, but every .5 we would come across a new shrine to stop and take in. Our accommodations tonight are in a traditional Japanese home, complete with futon mats to sleep on and ceilings that are much too short for my head. We were treated to local food and cold sake! Can’t wait for what tomorrow brings! 🍱🥢

Jolly in Japan!

I am having the best time in Japan! The food is amazing. The people are kind. The sights are stunning 🤩. Our Jolly Gear retailer showed us around for our first week in Japan and they took us to the best spots! We learned Jolly is not Japan sized 😂 I’ve hit my head too many times already! So much history and culture mixed with futuristic technology makes our time in Tokyo so unique and exciting.

Japan is very yabai 😎
