General information
PLUMERIA ENTERPRISES In Kenya many people often joke that "sewing is meant for women". This is because in the past hundred thousand women did the sewing jobs to feed their families back home. Chrispus Charo found himself in this situation when unemployment rose after the insecurity in Kenya had paralyzed the tourism industry. Chrispus Charo has a grade three certificate in Tailoring and dressmaking, and before Chrispus gained independence he had worked for many years as a Field Officer at Touch Africa International and later a Programme Manager at Plumeria International Community based Organisation. However, in the early 2013 Kenya experienced a lot of insecurity which real affected the tourism industry which is the organizations main activities and since the organization did not receive enough funding or support to continue operating - after one year, the organization stopped its main activities. Chrispus Charo left to find work in Mariakani, and he found himself unemployed and responsible for his family. Chrispus Charo decided to start his own sewing business, immediately convincing her wife Rukia, to join her in the venture. He started small, borrowing enough money from friends and family to rent a space and one sewing machine. he has contracts with several local factories to sew uniforms, but are also able to devote some of their time to sewing dresses, trousers, shorts, shirts, half-coat, coat for people in the community. The business was successful, so Chrispus decided to upgrade and expand the business. Even with, more demand for his services the potential for plumeria's enterprise had not yet been reached. The sewing machine was very small and slow, and Chrispus believed they could increase production if they had new big machines. Now Chrispus needs a business loan from any source, in order to get a new sewing machine, more fabrics plus more required items for the business. Chrispus believes the availability of the new sewing machines will help the business production from sewing 10 uniforms a day to 30. And will be able to secure more school uniform contracts and hire more sewers. More sewers means more contracts. More contracts mean more fabric. And, hopefully, more fabric means more work for the tailors that will mean creating more job opportunities. While Chrispus refers to the business as a factory, it is not much more than a big room crammed tightly with a sewing machine, pieces of fabric, and a small cutting table. Chrispus and his wife eagerly talk about their future plans for the business. Each month, they save, so that they eventually hire more sewers and finance their business' expansion. Chrispus has big plans to open a big workshop. Just five month ago, he was trying to create jobs for himself but now he is excited by the possibility of creating jobs for others in Mariakani. In fact, when he talks about business growth, he doesn’t mention his own personal profit, but instead count how many jobs he will be able to create.
