How to Identify scammers/ conmen in Mitumba business
Having been in the mitumba business for quite some time, I have come across all types of evil minded and lazy breed of people who wants to get easy money without working. Two days ago, a smart person wanted to scam me 787000 and he could not believe that I was smarter than him. The following were the red flags;
1. His whatsapp phone number was not going through. Any one time you are communicating with someone, be keen on how he is using the phone, texting on whatsapp but using a different number to call.
2. I sent the packing list and he made his list of orders. Anyone who has been in mitumba business knows there are items which you cannot find more than two bales but he was ordering more than five bales. This is also a red flag.
3. According to his order of 789000 it shows he is not new in scamming business and I decided to use my mind and trick him on two things which I indicated with lower prices and another two items I indicated with higher prices. He ordered more of those with lower prices . This indicates he was aware of the prices of what he was ordering. He had done his research well.
4. He wanted to be sure of the condition of the bales. I assured him its not old stock by requesting for a video call which he declined. Well, only a scammer or a fool would buy goods worth close to a million shillings without verifying. This was the key red flag. Be keen on such when doing mitumba business.
5. I asked him about the means of transport and he knew the lorries that operate from Gikomba to Kisii but he insisted on organising a lorry from outside Gikomba. The loading time was to be 6am. Early morning loading and late payments in the account is mostly for scammers.
6. Payment was done by cheque and I informed him that I can't release the goods until the money reflects in my account. The story changes though a notification was sent to my phone from the bank . He said his wife will deposit cash. Such a transaction is a real red flag.
7. The receipt of the deposit was sent to me but I checked on the time of deposit was at 1547 hrs, the cheque was done at 1633 hrs meaning the cash was deposited before the cheque was done. At this point I knew he thought he was smarter than me.
8. The bank account I had given him had 10 digits but on the deposit receipt it had 11 digits. Just note the scammer uses the number that is duplicate to add one more because its not easy to notice but I am always keen on such things.
9. After all the documents were given to me, I started engaging the banks with the evidence little did this mr Christopher, the scammer, knew that since we started chatting and immediately I checked his mode of communication I was screenshotting everything and recording the conversation.
10. I called him to let him know I knew who he was and asked him to stop immediately. He deleted thebank receipt copy on his whats app but to his surprise I sent all the screenshots of everything from day one to him and i felt so good to prove to him that am not a fool as he is ,and on the other hand all the other details of the transaction were somewhere safe.
11. By that time the bank told me of a bouncing cheque and I will be charged. I texted him and demanded him to deposit 2K for the charges in my account otherwise...
12. He knew the otherwise.......was could mean anything on earth and he opted its not acceptable to harvest where he had not sworn. At that point he had to call the bank to cancel the cheque. By that time I was already at the bank. The issue is on a conman but not the fullstop.
To that scammer and the group you cannot harvest where you have not sworn. Life is already hard but your goal is to make it harder for others. This has opened a new chapter in my life. I will keep on educating people about the red flags.
To all my FB family, kindly reach out to me if you have ever been scammed and let me pick more redflags from your story and when people are aware of the tricks of the scammers we will minimise the crime.
To a mr Christopher the scammer, I know you will read this article and you will try to act smart next time but trust me I will devote myself to getting more information and I promise to be always smarter than you. Its a long article but worth reading.
