From Community to Action: The Dignity Shoes Initiative Begins in Gatundu

3.6 PAIRS OF SHOES. THAT IS WHERE WE BEGIN.

When VAAKENYA closed its retail arm, we weren't closing VAAKENYA.

We were changing how we wanted to build.

After years of retail, we decided to move towards a community-driven model — working with communities, churches, chamas, schools, alumni, companies and local leaders.

And that journey led us to the Dignity Shoes Initiative.

We launched Dignity Shoes in Gatundu together with local leadership and community members, including Senior Patrick Muiru, Rev. Thomas Ndungu of Full Gospel Church Gatundu, Pastor Sarah Wainaina of Faith Ministry Gatundu, Dr. Daniel Wainaina and Mr. Mbote Waweru.

We read the proposal together.

We discussed the idea.

And then we started our first community action.

This time, we decided not to think about a Harambee simply as money.

We decided to think about it in shoes.

VAAKENYA's official business-to-community price is KES 2,500 per pair, regardless of shoe size.

Our first Harambee therefore translates into:

KES 1,000 = 0.4 shoes

KES 8,000 pledged = 3.2 shoes

TOTAL = 3.6 pairs

That's right.

3.6 pairs of shoes.

Our pilot school, Gatundu Primary, has approximately 1,365 learners.

So we have a long way to go.

But this is exactly how community building works.

Someone starts.

Someone joins.

Someone contributes.

Someone mobilises.

And slowly, something that seemed impossible begins to move.

Our goal is to get 1,365 Kenyan-made Dignity Shoes to the children of Gatundu Primary through community action.

But the bigger goal is to show what communities can do when we organise ourselves around production, not only crisis.

The Dignity Shoes proposal calls this a Leather Harambee — using our Kenyan tradition of coming together to create demand for Kenyan-made leather shoes and strengthen the leather industry.

Because every pair connects us to a much bigger chain of Kenyan livelihoods.

Every pair creates demand.

Every pair tells a manufacturer: keep building.

Every pair tells an artisan: your skill matters.

Every pair tells a young person: there is an industry here to explore.

And every pair tells a community:

We can build together.

We have also been reflecting on what it means to be a pioneer.

A recent Substack we read on The Rise and Fall of Empires describes the Age of Pioneers through qualities such as courage, enterprise, experimentation and overcoming obstacles.

We think those qualities matter for Africa today.

We need young people who are willing to build.

To experiment.

To create.

To manufacture.

To organise.

To solve problems.

To build businesses and industries.

Builders in Africa must embody the spirit of building a nation.

So yes, we are starting with 3.6 pairs.

But we are looking towards 1,365.

And perhaps one day, communities across Kenya will be asking a much bigger question:

What else can we build together?

Join the conversation.

Watch out for the incoming Dignity Shoes actions as we work towards getting all 1,365 children at Gatundu Primary their shoes.

3.6 pairs down. 1,361.4 to go.

The journey has begun. 🇰🇪

Dear Customer, ❤️

Today is a day we'll never forget.

When we made our very first pair back in 2017, we never imagined the journey would bring us here—to thousands of conversations, countless friendships, and a community that believed in a small Kenyan dream.

Today marks the **final day of VAAKENYA Retail**.

It's not easy to say goodbye to this chapter. For eight years, you've welcomed us into your homes, your workplaces, your weddings, your graduations, your travels, and your everyday life. Every order was more than a sale—it was a vote of confidence in Kenyan craftsmanship and in our mission of **Dignifying African Feet**.

To everyone who ever bought a pair, referred a friend, shared our posts, visited our workshop, or simply encouraged us—**thank you**.

You helped build VAAKENYA.

If you've been waiting for the right moment to own one last retail pair, **today is that moment**. At midnight, this chapter closes.

Tomorrow, we begin a new journey—working with **groups, chamas, companies, schools, institutions, and communities** through our new engagement model. We are excited about the future, but we'll always cherish the memories we've created together.

From the bottom of our hearts...

**Thank you for walking with us.**
Thank you for believing in us.
Thank you for helping us dignify African feet.

This isn't goodbye.

It's the beginning of a new chapter, and we hope you'll continue walking with us.

With gratitude,

**The VAAKENYA Family** 💙👣

As we prepare to turn the page, we simply wanted to say, thank you.

Thank you for choosing our handcrafted shoes. Thank you for trusting a Kenyan brand. Thank you for every order, every referral, every kind message, and every step you've taken with us. Because of you, VAAKENYA has grown into more than a business—it has become a community.

If you've been planning to own one last pair, this is your moment. **Retail officially closes on 31st July**, and we'd love the opportunity to make that final pair just for you.

ORDER BEFORE THEY'RE GONE FOREVER.

Every pair of VAAKENYA shoes tells a story. Every step you've taken in them has been part of our journey.

Now we're entering a new chapter.

On 31st July 2026, VAAKENYA will officially close its retail (B2C) business.

This isn't goodbye to VAAKENYA—it's the beginning of a new mission.

From 1st August 2026, we'll focus on community engagement, grassroots partnerships, group orders, companies, schools, Saccos, chamas, clubs and utility leather footwear that serves more people while continuing our mission of Dignifying African Feet.

Before that happens, this is your final opportunity to own your favourite VAAKENYA retail designs.

✔ Classic leather shoes
✔ Boots
✔ Casuals
✔ Signature collections

Once retail closes, these products will no longer be available through our retail store.

📲 Order on WhatsApp: 0739 042 644
🚚 We deliver countrywide.

Thank you for believing in local manufacturing, Kenyan craftsmanship and our mission from day one. The next chapter is even bigger—and we'd love for you to be part of it.

When we dream dreams of Kenyan leather, we dream dreams where Kenyan leather is made for Kenyans, by Kenyans.

And when we think export, we dream African markets — for Africans, by Africans.

Because nowhere in the world are proper leather shoes more needed than in Africa. In our tropical climate, breathability is not a luxury — it is a necessity.

Like this shoe from our research and development — made with 90% leather:

The insole is texon, also known as leather board, with a leather sock finish.
The uppers is goat leather.
The lining is sheepskin leather.
With a leather sole and a rubber tip.

This is not just about making shoes. It is about making sense — designing for our climate, our movement, our everyday lives.

The future of Kenyan leather is African. Built here. Worn here. Valued here.

FRIDAY THOUGHT: Closing One Chapter, Building the Next

Every business reaches a point where it has to choose between staying comfortable… or growing into what it was always meant to be.

At Vaakenya, we are at that point.

Over the years, retail allowed us to connect with you directly — to be part of your everyday moments, your first days, your events, your milestones. For that, we are deeply grateful.

But growth demands clarity.

We have made the decision to close our retail (B2C) operations on 31st July 2026. Until then, we are inviting everyone who has ever wanted a Vaakenya piece to make their final individual purchases before this chapter comes to an end.

From 1st August 2026, we begin a new journey.

A more focused one.
A more intentional one.
A more impactful one.

We are transitioning to a community-driven model, working with groups, companies, Saccos, chamas, and institutions — and at the same time, we are doubling down on something we strongly believe in:

The leather industry.

Africa has always had the raw materials.
What we haven’t fully captured is the value.

This transition is about stepping into that gap — by designing and producing products with leather at the core, building within the local value chain, and contributing to an industry that has the power to create jobs, strengthen skills, and grow African manufacturing.

This is why the shift is long overdue.

It allows us to:
✔️ Focus on durability and quality
✔️ Build stronger partnerships
✔️ Scale impact beyond individual sales
✔️ Create products that truly represent our mission

Closing retail is not the end of Vaakenya.

It is the beginning of a more deliberate version of it.

To everyone who has supported us — bought from us, shared our story, believed in our work — thank you. You are part of this journey, and this next chapter is being built with you in mind.

We step into it with gratitude… and with conviction.

The best is still ahead.

We have an important update for our Vaakenya community.

We are transitioning away from retail and focusing on community and bulk orders—serving groups, chamas, Saccos, companies, and organizations.

At the same time, we are taking a bold step into the leather industry. Our goal is to make Vaakenya truly about leather, for leather, by increasing the use of leather across all our products.

This means:
• We will phase out designs with no leather (like Ankara styles)
• Every product will contain leather going forward
• We are working towards 25% leather by 2030 and 50% by 2035

This shift allows us to focus on quality, durability, and impact.

Thank you for walking this journey with us as we continue dignifying African feet.

We’re saying goodbye to retail… and this is your final call.

For years, you’ve walked with us — from your first day at work, to events, to everyday moments. Now, as we transition to a community & bulk order model, some of your favorite pieces will no longer be available for individual purchase.

This is your LAST chance to own them before they disappear:

👞 African Loafers
🧺 Kiondo Bags
👜 Koki Bags (Ankara)
👡 Sandals

⏳ Retail closes on 31st July 2026

After this, Vaakenya will focus on community-driven orders, leather products, and deeper impact in the leather industry.

If you’ve ever wanted a pair… this is the moment.

Don’t miss it.
