Over the last two days, Plastiki Rafiki had the pleasure of hosting Design and Visual Arts Teaching Assistants from the International Community School of Addis Ababa for a hands-on workshop focused on small-scale plastic recycling. ♻️

The workshop covered the use, maintenance, and troubleshooting of different recycling machines, as well as various methods of mold design and manufacturing. Participants also had the opportunity to visit one of our partner recycling spaces in Mathare to learn more about our community partnership model and how grassroots recycling initiatives can create both environmental and social impact.

We are excited to see the ICS recycling program continue to grow and look forward to many future collaborations between our two schools and communities!

Bottle caps → recycled plastic keychains ♻️

For Earth Day, Middle School students joined us in the workshop to experience the recycling process up close. They collected bottle caps, used the injection machine, drilled their own keychains, and saw how plastic waste can become something creative, useful, and beautiful.

A small keychain, but a big lesson in sustainability 🌿

From recycled plastic to a bench at Karura Forest 🌿

For ISK’s Earth Day, we came together to build, plant, and install a bench that shows how plastic waste can be transformed into something meaningful. It was a day full of teamwork, laughter, learning, and giving back to the environment.

Proud to be part of a project that turns sustainability into action. ♻️💚

Big shout out to Kijiji Solutions! ♟️♻️

Using CNC-machined aluminium molds developed by Plastiki Rafiki, Kijiji Solutions has taken the lead in manufacturing these unique recycled-plastic chess pieces. The chess board is made from reclaimed woven polypropylene bags, creating a product that is both creative and sustainable.

We also love that the molding machine featured is a unique friction press — not one of ours, but an excellent example of Kenyan ingenuity and local manufacturing talent.

Check out their feature on NTV Kenya and celebrate a great example of collaboration, recycling, and homegrown innovation.
