South Tribes

South Tribes We create tassel jewelry and accessories, hire women from vulnerable communities and revive the forgotten tradition of tassel weaving in Central Asia.

South Tribes is a social entrepreneurship project based in Kyrgyzstan, Central Asia. The project has started as a cultural endeavor to revive nearly forgotten local tradition of tassel weaving and provide income generation for women by designer Altynai Osmoeva and feminist entrepreneur Jamila Kulova. The community of migrant women who come from the southern Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan fo

rm the core of our tassel weavers team. Women the Project works with have migrated with their families to the underserved informal settlements around Bishkek, the capital and largest city, in search of better life, but still face larger obstacles to access clean water, adequate housing, healthcare and education for them and their children. The South Tribes project provides a sustainable economic model by training women the mastery of the unique Central Asian tassel weaving technique and at the same give paid work to them that allows them to be financially independent, take care of themselves and their families.
