Gender equity is the process of being fair to women and men. To ensure fairness, strategies and measures must often be available to compensate for women’s historical and social disadvantages that prevent women and men from otherwise operating on a level playing field.

Where gender inequality exists, it is generally women who are excluded or disadvantaged to decision-making and access to economic and social resources. Therefore a critical aspect of promoting gender equality is the empowerment of women, with a focus on identifying and redressing power imbalances and giving women more autonomy to manage their own lives.

Gender equality does not mean that men and women become the same; only that access to opportunities and life changes is neither dependent on, nor constrained by, their s*x.

Achieving gender equality requires women’s empowerment to ensure that decision-making at private and public levels and access to resources are no longer weighted in men’s favour so that both women and men can fully participate as equal partners in productive and reproductive life.

By daring to dream of a future without oppression, we begin to imagine systems where our bodies can live freely, dance, play and EAT without the associated codes we’ve inherited from cultures and people before us.

Imagining a future void of oppressive systems is hard, but What if I told you that you have the right to that world?

We all have a right to feel safe, valid, happy, and loved in the bodies we were born into. It is our right and we’re gonna fight to make it happen. The collective fight we imagine will take all of us living in bodies to dismantle these oppressive systems together.

We live in a society that constantly questions its women. From the clothes we wear to the colour of our skin to the choices we make, everything is forever being scrutinized.

However, if there is one thing, we as a society have mastered, it is the art of body shaming.

Since childhood, we are made to believe in stereotypes, “If you become fat, no one will marry you!” or “You’re so thin, you look unhealthy and weak!”

Society needs to realise that the way a woman looks, our physical appearance and our bodies alone do not make us who we are. There is so much more to us than what meets the eye.

What if the things you think they think about you isn’t at all what they think?

The things you think other people think of you can be disastrous for your wellbeing. So don’t ever let what you think other people think of you stop you from doing your thing. It’s your own thing and you do it the way you do it.

As long as you stay true to yourself and share your goodness, no one can fault you. And what if they think you are amazing, inspiring, knowledgeable and true?

Be visible. Be seen. Be you.

As fully functioning, fully mature adult, we should be doing things every day that move us toward the fulfilment of our potential. We should feel grateful for all our blessings in every area. If we are unhappy or dissatisfied in any part of our life, something is not right in our thoughts, feelings, or actions, and it needs to be corrected.

The starting point in unlocking our full potential is to realize that we already are a prince or princess, deep down inside.

While women have made significant strides in the past decades, the culture at large continues to place a great emphasis on how women look.

“We are constantly surrounded by all sorts of media and we construct our identities in part through media images we see,” - Cutler.

And the more girls are exposed to thin-ideal kinds of media, the more they are dissatisfied with their bodies and with themselves overall. Adolescent girls are the most strongly affected demographic.

“More and more 12-year-old girls are going on diets because they believe what you weigh determines their worth. When all you see is a body type that only two per cent of the population has, it’s difficult to remember what’s real and what’s reasonable to expect of yourself and everyone else.” - Cutler.

“Cinderella," a timeless romantic fantasy story about the power of goodness, optimism, glittery balls, glass slippers and "THE Prince Charming".

The story emphasizes how a fairy godmother will appear from nowhere to rescue us from our misery, and finally, how we will meet our prince charming who will search for us and then we will live "happily ever after".

Alas! Real-life is anything but a Cinderella story. And this is exactly what we need to teach our daughters.

We should encourage them to create an adaptable strategic plan for their success. Instead of sitting passively waiting to be noticed about opportunities.

Remind them that different rules for success apply to different people. Also, make sure that they remember that even the powerful witches, stepmothers and all the evils in all the possible forms can never take away their destiny or stop them from achieving it.

The fall of the patriarchy isn’t about women rising and overturning men.

It is about the patriarchal programming that runs deep within all of us. It affects all of us and keeps us all stuck in deep suffering, pain and separation (men included). It is suppression, isolation, hierarchy, abuse, and so much more.

Patriarchal conditioning and programming have their roots deep, where it expresses racism, s*xism, gender inequality, and all the distorted lenses through which life is viewed.

This is not about women vs men. This is about all of us rising together fierce and stronger to fight against the internalized norms that don't favour us in any way.

Have you ever felt discouraged and tired when trying to produce positive change in your life?

You might be overlooking the single, most important thing that you need to have the courage and energy to accomplish the changes you want.

It’s called the power to be yourself.

This power is something that we are all born with. The problem is that we are encouraged from a very early age to s***f this power out as quickly as possible.

Why? So we can fit in with the larger, uniform group called society.

These attempts at uniformity come at a very high cost to the individual. The result is that we each become very insecure and confused about who we are. We learn to be afraid to take risks. We come to believe that it’s safer to blend in with the crowd.

The unfortunate thing is that this fear lingers into adulthood and ultimately becomes a permanent way of life.

Take some time to look within and review your life overall. Where in your life did you compromise for the sake of other’s approval? Why did you stop loving yourself as you are?

Begin a process of reclaiming those parts of yourself that you have been denying for years. Welcome them with open arms, and then forgive yourself for having imprisoned what might be the best parts of you for the sake of other people’s opinions.

It’s never too late to change.

Everything is going to be okay.

Really. It’s going to be okay.

Right now the worst is happening, and we might feel like it’s our fault. It might be our fault, but that’s not very important. What’s important is that we remember that where we are is temporary, and tomorrow is going to be better.

While we wait for it to be okay, let's remember all the reasons that the world is blessed to have us here. Think of all the times we’ve made people smile.

Let's not think about how we could have done better, made smarter choices, been a better version of ourself. Those are all impossibilities. In the present time, we are always the best version of who we have become and to wish anything different is to fall victim to the attractive lie that our mistakes are a result of our shortcomings.

Everything will be okay.

Challenge yourself to believe this, and hold onto the lightness that comes from letting go.

Let go completely. Remember that life is temporary, and this challenge is just a blip on the radar.
