A Japanese researcher carried out an experiment to discover which clothing colours stay coolest under intense summer sunlight ☀️👕 Researcher Toshiaki Ichinose tested nine different coloured polo shirts outdoors at Japan’s National Institute for Environmental Studies during weather around 30°C.
The shirts were placed under direct sunlight for five minutes while a thermal camera measured how much heat each one absorbed. The results showed major differences between light and dark colours. White stayed the coolest and remained close to normal air temperature, while yellow also performed very well. Darker colours like dark green and black absorbed far more heat and became extremely hot, with temperatures rising above 50°C 🌡️
The experiment confirmed why light-coloured clothing is often recommended during hot weather. Light colours reflect more sunlight, helping people stay cooler and more comfortable, while darker colours trap heat much more easily.
Researchers also pointed to larger international studies showing that people wearing lighter clothes under direct sunlight experienced noticeably lower skin temperatures compared to those wearing darker outfits.
The findings are now gaining attention online because they provide a simple scientific explanation for why many people naturally choose white or light-coloured clothing during summer heat 😎✨
