"Whether you believe in God or not does not matter so much, whether you believe in Buddha or not does not matter so much; as a Buddhist, whether you believe in reincarnation or not does not matter so much. You must lead a good life. And a good life does not mean just good food, good clothes, good shelter. These are not sufficient. A good motivation is what is needed: compassion, without dogmatism, without complicated philosophy; just understanding that others are human brothers and sisters and respecting their rights and human dignity."

A radiant mandala halo surrounds him, representing enlightened wisdom shining in all directions. He holds a medicine bowl, signifying spiritual and physical healing for all beings.

For some of us, the meditation cushion can be a scary place. Silence and alone with your thoughts. Awareness of breath, brings us back to the moment and joy of being.

Legend

The Storm: Four to six weeks after achieving enlightenment, the Buddha was meditating under a tree when a massive, seven-day, unseasonable storm arose.

The Protection: Mucalinda, the King of the Nagas, emerged from his underwater abode to protect the Buddha. He coiled his body around the Buddha seven times and spread his great, multi-headed hood over the Buddha's head like an umbrella to shield him from the rain, cold, wind, and insects.

The Aftermath: Once the storm passed, Mucalinda assumed the form of a young man, bowed before the Buddha, and expressed his joy.

Symbolism: This story signifies that the Dharma (the Buddha's teachings) offers protection to those who follow it. It also represents the reconciliation of the natural world (represented by the Naga) with the spiritual world.
